ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK, PROFESSOR UDUAK ARCHIBONG, BASED IN BRADFORD

Biography

Professor Uduak Archibong PhD MBE is Professor of Diversity at the University of Bradford, UK, where she directs the Centre for Inclusion and Diversity and provides strategic oversight for equality and diversity across the institution. She is Fellow of the West African College of Nursing and Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing. Her research, teaching, and knowledge transfer activities broadly cover the areas of workforce diversity, diversity competent leadership development, family-centred health care and cross-cultural negotiation

of community/family access to, and engagement in health and social services. Her research interests have been influenced by many years’ experience of working closely with leaders and senior managers within the healthcare and higher education arenas both in the UK and internationally. She has recently led to completion a major multi-million European Commission funded action research project, GENOVATE, across 7 European Universities and is currently involved in a multi-million Horizon 2020 project, RRING, along with 22 international partners in Europe, China, Africa, India, Japan, North America and South America.  She is also involved in a national research study ‘Cracking the Concrete Ceiling’ which seeks to explore the impact of the ‘Diversifying Leadership’ programme of the Leadership Foundation [now part of Advance HE] on UK Black and Minority Ethnic Academic staff. This study is in collaboration with Royal Holloway, University of London, the University of East London and the Equality Challenge Unit [now part of Advance HE].  She is the Guest Editor of a recently published Special Issue of the Journal of Psychological Issues in Organisational Culture entitled ‘Reframing Diversity Interventions in Austere Times’.

ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK, SADE SANGOWAWA – FOUNDER OF CULTURES CIC

Sade Sangowawa – Founder  and Chief Executive, Cultures CIC
Sade Sangowawa is the founder and chief executive of Cultures a community interest
company based at 66 Dovecot Street, Stockton which aims to advance the economic, social and cultural integration practices for disadvantaged BME, Refugee and migrant
communities in the Northeast. She is also co-founder founder of YFT Consult a Health and Cultural awareness consultancy.

She has designed various projects for schools and communities aimed at promoting social and economic inclusion of new communities. She is a strategic thinker with a passion to increase cultural awareness and entrepreneurship in disadvantaged communities through collaborative work. One of such project is Cultures Homes aimed at providing affordable housing for Migrants while helping to develop skills needed in a new environment.
She is the founder of the A Taste of Africa events in its 17th year in Tees Valley and The Black History Youths awards.
Also co-founder of the first integrated enterprise women’s network in Tees Valley called
Buddy group. She is also a cultural awareness trainer and author of various books e.g. Similarities and Differences, Dare to be Different (Religious Resource), Black inventors, Black achievers, Black British Achievers resource for young learners, RAWE (Raising Awareness of Work Ethics) etc.
She hold a BA in Business Management and MBA (Masters in Business Administration).
She has won few awards over the period. Married with 3 children.

ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK , ANZIR BOODOO – ORIGINALLY FROM MAURITIUS

Anzir Boodoo is a freelance Urbanist working around transport, planning and urban sustainability, and has worked extensively with The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (in the UK and Mauritius), Planners Network UK, Living Streets Leeds, Zero Carbon Yorkshire and Leeds Disabled People’s Organisation. He also co-founded Leeds Disabled People’s Organisation CIC to provide an independent campaigning voice for disabled people in the city, which has since worked with Leeds City Council, West Yorkshire Police and Leeds Pride

 

As an artist, he works with storytelling, puppets and light, with a diverse portfolio of work exploring Biology, Physics, History, Propaganda, and the environmental impact of technology. All this work is done in collaboration, both with The Superposition collective of Artists, Scientists and Makers he helps to run, and with outside partners. He has exhibited at Light Night Leeds, Leeds Science Week and Superposition’s ASMbly Festival.

ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK, FAROUK AGORO – ARCHITECT AND ARTIST

Farouk Adegboyega Agoro is an artist and architect based in Brixton, London. Originally born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria to a Nigerian father and Jamaican mother, he moved to England as a young teenager to attend school. Farouk’s parents studied in the USA in the 1960-70s before returning to Nigeria to settle and he was greatly influenced by their music, art and literature collections from that period.  His father, now a retired town planner, was always sketching and doodling while his mother, a retired pharmacist, is still very crafty – crocheting, sewing, making dolls, quilts, bags etc… Farouk was surrounded by a lot of creativity which guided him towards him pursuing architecture as a career.

He has been working as an architect for over 12 years and has been painting on and off during that period. With a desire to pursue other creative projects, he decided to divert more attention in the past three years to his passion for painting as a form of expression.
