POETRY CORNER – [ origins ], WRITTEN BY ABEIKU ARHIN TSIWAH FROM GHANA

[ origins ]

😐
some bodies survive under water
when a heart breaks
and tears form a castle

good things happen effortlessly
like finding love in a wand
in the middle of a terrorist attack

ugly things do not survive day light
they are like alphabets
breaking into sentences in darkness

beautiful things are not always beautiful
sometimes it is just the music in their rigid bodies
that attract our feet in the sand

someone next door died a night ago
and our neighbour’s dog came wailing
like it had mistaken a stone for a bone

but you see – not everything makes sense to all men
while some are smokeless cigarettes
others are mayhem writing crustal bodies in the sand

my mother isn’t dead yet
but i cry as much as a child
whose mother died on a moon a night ago

not everyone is a product of the earth
some are dead bodies
resurrected in poems & silicon chips

on every wednesday
i want to be like a god with bones & heart
that can be broken by the hand of love

but you see – i’m no god
& i’m no spirit but biology
finding a woman to breathe life into
😐

She has worked as volunteer in different local and international organizations where she focused on helping communities and individuals become the best part of them.
As a passionate girl child advocate with the goal of becoming an international girl child advocate and research consultant, Nkechi founded Center For Girl Child Research And Advocacy where she focuses on helping individuals and organizations working around gender by providing appropriate verifiable qualitative and quantitative data and also help to develop effective intervention strategies on these issues. POETRY CORNER “AND OUR SHRINES NOW HAVE HOLES” WRITTEN BY KENNETH CHRISTIE ATITI

-and our shrines now have holes-

I woke up as a wizard today
with scales on my palms
and rivers beneath my footsteps

so I walked on
along that thin glass
of flowing men like plenty water
and women whose hair were snakes like Medusa

before noon
I was an ordinary man
who was carried like a baby
on the back of many worrying spirits-

they were my kindred
from future times
and were only here
to break the endless tide
of mother and child in an open market

but they would tear my tongue at noon
when they sought feathers of eggshell sublimities
at the fiery festival of tangled rhythms
where they spoke in scents of a sleepless bride

and still there
I saw her proud again in flashing memories –
like a clan-country-continent
dressed in colourless robes

yet if we must call names
let us not Trump all in one hole –
where black cocks claim innocence
at the unconcerned rites
that would cut their brothers’ throats
and then cry fowl

but we all came from God’s loin
at the breaking age
where we washed our navels with dew drops
by the side of the Martyrs’ blood
at these comings and goings
of a groping “igbakhuan” ancestry
not knowing that gods stay home
in their own shrines

and I will wear my beads proudly
and not let this error of darkening clouds
prevail in his mouthing judgment
even if it is still noon –

for his words run from him too
as we do from our unkempt shrines

IGBO LANGUAGE SCHOOL OPENS IN FRANKFURT, GERMANY ON THE 20TH OF JANUARY

IGBO LANGUAGE SCHOOL OPENS IN FRANKFURT, GERMANY ON THE 20TH OF JANUARY

In a bid to promote African languages in the diaspora, an organisation will open a school where children can learn Igbo in the German city of Frankfurt. Igbo is the language of the Igbo people, one of the main ethnic groups in Nigeria.

Founded by the Christian Igbo Professionals Network (CIPN), the official opening ceremony of the Igbo Language School Frankfurt will take place on 20 January 2018.

“The Igbo Language School Frankfurt Germany was conceived to teach Igbo language to Igbo children in Germany as well as to other interested persons, and to promote friendship amongst cultures,” the CIPN said in a press statement signed by Engr Stanley Okoli and Mr Che Chidi Chukwumerije, Chairman and Secretary respectively of the organisation.

IGBO

“The Opening Ceremony of the Igbo Language School Frankfurt will be an opportunity to familiarize you with our vision, and present our mission and school plan in the upcoming period.”

The CIPN believes that children of African descent born and bred in the diaspora should be afforded the opportunity to learn the mother tongue of their parents. The language, they believe, is the window to their culture of origin.

The Igbo language, a member of the Volta-Niger branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages, has approximately 24 million speakers in Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. Igbo is written in the Latin script, which was introduced by British colonialists. // SJ

Opening Ceremony of the Igbo Language School Frankfurt
Date: Saturday 20th Jan 2018, 12pm
Venue: Saalbau Niederrad (Clubraum 2), Goldsteinstraße 33, 60528 Frankfurt am Main
