Today the Calabar carnival is  not only the biggest street party in the whole of Africa but its also an eye opener into the talent, creativity and great minds of the people from Cross River State, Nigeria

The  Carnival continued last night for the 11th year in a row,  Co-incidentally, 11 Countries had confirmed their participation : Spain, France, Italy, Burundi Kenya, Brazil, China, Ghana, Rwanda, Belize and Burundi were on the list.

Brazil almost stole the show with exciting dances and thought provoking dance rhythms that thrilled the crowd.

Nothing could beat Nigeria’s performance. Dancers flying in the air like footballs! The kind of dancing Nigeria put down, would have been hard to beat anywhere.

There was also a lot of Beautiful, and exciting calypso. A lot of calypso has been  featured in past events but it was most Nigerian music this time.

ALOK SHARMA, MP FOR READING WEST,HELPS KICK OF XMAS CELEBRATIONS IN STYLE

Alok Sharma, the Member of Parliament for Reading West, helped kick-off Christmas celebrations in Theale this weekend by helping to judge the ‘Best Christmas Window’ competition.

The theme of the competition this year was ‘A Christmas Carol’, with shops being judged on their creativity, impact, theme and effort. Alok joined three other panellists to judge the competition, including a longstanding Theale resident and two pupils from Theale Green School.

Winning the competition was ‘Frame Direct’, a bespoke framing specialist shop, who were presented with the coveted Best Christmas Window shield. Florists ‘Croppers in Bloom’ and charity ‘Mercy in Action’ were both highly commended.

Father Christmas also made a special appearance, switching on the Christmas lights on Theale High Street and set up a grotto for children to visit him and receive a gift. The High Street was closed to traffic for a large Christmas market, which included a host of Christmas-themed food and gifts.

Holy Trinity Church made a special contribution to the evening’s events by staging a traditional Nativity play featuring local primary school children and real donkeys, while the choir sang carols in The Volunteer pub.

Alok Sharma said: “I was delighted to attend Theale Parish Council’s superbly organised Christmas event, many thanks to Parish Council Clerk Jo Friend and all the parish councillors and volunteers who helped to make the evening a wonderful success. I thoroughly enjoyed judging the best dressed window competition, which was very highly contested, so congratulations to the winners, Frame Direct. Thanks also to all of the pupils from Theale Primary School who took part in the Nativity play, which was a confidently delivered and sublime performance by all!”

Jo Friend, Theale Parish Council Clerk said: “We were delighted so many people braved the weather to join us at the Christmas Lights event, which included the biggest Christmas market to date. A big thank you also to Alok, who has been very supportive of Theale, for doing a brilliant job judging the Best Christmas Window competition.”

MY NEW POEM ON BBC RADIO TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF RACE RELATIONS ACT

This year marks The 50th celebration of the Race relations act.
The act was drafted in direct response to the hostility and discrimination shown to Black and asian immigrants who were faced with all kinds of prejudices with regards to work, housing and equal opportunities.
The successful boycott of a bus company in Bristol led to the emergence of The Race relations act in 1965 which then became a turning point for change.
The Activist, Paul Stephenson played a very major role at the time.
This week, I was approached by BBC RADIO to compose a poem to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Race relations act.

HEY

My new satire called “SECRETS IN THE WIND” was read on BBC RADIO BERKSHIRE this morning

HAPPY READING

THE SECRETS IN THE WIND (A SOCIAL SATIRE)

Tonight we celebrate the sequel of a tense thriller,
SAME STORY
SAME SOUNDTRACK
NEW FILMSTARS
And the secrets of a new agenda are gently printed in the wind,
Sometimes to small for the eyes to see

Tonight we celebrate,
A tragic collection of broken promises,
1000 stories of untold gunshots,
The cold drama from an elusive script, governed by invisible laws

Tonight we celebrate,
5 decades of “uncommon wealth”
The tragedy and comedy of double and single standards
A warm evening in Bristol
A journey into the palace of truth
The vision of Paul Stephensons

Or a chance for you and I to dance to polluted jazz from polite strangers
Or to revive the passion from the talking drum
