MUSIC SPOTLIGHT- CELEBRATING THE AMAZING KING SUNNY ADE – THE KING OF JUJU MUSIC

King Sunny Ade is the undisputed king of juju music, the dance-inspiring hybrid of western pop and traditional African music with roots in the guitar tradition of Nigeria. Although he’s yet to equal the success that he enjoyed with his early-’80s albums and American tours, Ade and his band, His African Beats, continue to weave an infectious blend of electric guitars, synthesizers and multi-layered percussion. Born to a family of Nigerian royalty, Ade left school to pursue a career in music. In the mid-’60s, he performed with a highlife band, Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies. Ade formed his own band, the Green Spots, in 1967. Frustrated by the exploitation of the record industry, Ade launched his own record label in 1974. In the decades since, the label has released more than 100 of Ade‘s recordings in Nigeria. Ade began to attract attention in the western world when three of his albums — Juju MusicSynchro System, and Aura — were released in the early ’80s on the Mango label, a subsidiary of Island Records. Ade & His African Beats made their debut American performances to enthusiastic crowds in 1983. Although Juju Music and Synchro System showed signs that Ade was going up to live up to billing as “the African Bob Marley,” Aura was a commercial disappointment and the group was dropped by Island Records. While they released an album, Authority of Your Ticket, in 1990, it too failed to stir much commercial interest. E Dide (Get Up), released in 1995, offered hints that the best days of Ade and His African Beats were yet to come. The group followed it with Odu, a collection of ancient Nigerian songs, in 1998; the album was nominated for a Grammy. Its follow-up, Seven Degrees North, appeared in 2000. Ade has remained a powerful force in Nigeria. Money received from his early albums has been used to launch an oil firm, a mining company, a nightclub, a film and video production company, a PR firm, and a record label specializing in recordings by African artists. It’s been estimated than more than 700 people are employed by Ade‘s companies. In the mid-’90s, Ade founded the King Sunny Ade Foundation, an organization that includes a performing arts center, a state of the art recording studio, and housing for young musicians and performers on a five acre tract donated by the Lagos state government. Ade currently serves as chairperson of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria. In 1996, Ade formed a supergroup, the Way Forward, featuring top-notch Nigerian musicians. He and His African Beats have been featured in three films — Juju Music in 1988, Live at Montreux in 1990, and Roots of Rhythm in 1997.

Timothy Archibong Esu, a husband, father of five (two biological and three non biological), teacher, social crusader, community and youth and community leader, a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, without sounding immodest, is a lot more than any single individual can describe.

This fact stems from his birth into the families of the late Obong Daniel Asibong Ekpe Esu, a retired Commissioner of Police (Operations) of Ikot Esu, Creek Town, Odukpani LGA and the late Giftie Daniel Esu (nee Duke) of Ikot Edem Odo, Akpabuyo LGA both of Cross River State, Nigeria on 5 th April, 1976.

An avid believer in education of the mindset for personal and societal development, Timothy, in spite of certain setbacks such as being completely orphaned at a time when advanced education was on his mind, was educated at infancy in Ironbar Memorial Primary School (1983-1988); Duke Town Secondary School (1989-1991); Hope Waddell Training Institution (1991-1995); University of Calabar (1996-1999 forDiploma in Religion and Philosophy and 2009-2013 for LLB Law and Legal Studies) – all in Calabar, Cross River State; Loveworld Ministerial College, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria (Certificate in Ministerial Arts) – and in a number of other professional, management, technical, artisanal inclinations.

Currently, Timothy has settled down to the role of an entrepreneur having set up an educational facility with the name Goldmine Crèche and Schools in Calabar, Cross River State in 2014 to offer quality education to spark off creative inclinations in children while at the same time looking out for other opportunities to strategically fully express his vision in the field of early child care and educational services.

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT, CELEBRATING THE AMAZING MANU DIBANGO FROM CAMEROON

Dibango is Cameroon’s, and perhaps Africa’s, best-known jazz saxophonist. Starting in the 1950s, he became a globe-trotting musician, living and performing in France, Belgium, Jamaica, Zaire, and Cote d’Ivoire, as well as in Cameroon. In 1960, Dibango was one of the founding members of the Zairean band African Jazz, with whom he spent five years. World attention came to Dibango with the release in 1972 of Soul Makossa, a work that actually had precious little of the makossa sound in it, and scored later hits with Seventies and Ibida. Dibango‘s output has been prodigious and multi-faceted. He has worked with musicians as diverse as Fela KutiSly DunbarRobbie ShakespeareDon Cherry, and the Fania All-Stars.

In addition to being one of the leading jazz saxophonists of his generation, Dibango has also run nightclubs, directed orchestras, and started one of the first African musical journals. A later release, Polysonik — featuring English rapper MC Mello, Cameroonian singer Charlotte M’Bango leading a choral section, and sampled pygmy flutes — shows that Dibango is continuing to flourish and expand in challenging new directions.

His new book is an effective guide on practical ways to create and acquire wealth

NIGERIAN ENGINEERING STUDENT , JOSHUA OLALEYE DESIGNS AND BUILDS A MINI AUTOMATED VEHICLE

Throughout their studies students in the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering develop their skills and knowledge working on projects. In their second year all students take part in our mouse race competition. The challenge is to design, build and test an automated guided vehicle (known as a mouse) to follow a set route in the fastest time. Working in teams, students must prepare a design that is both fast and reliable; too much speed and the mouse will leave the circuit, too little speed and the mouse will not win.

Joshua was part of a team of three and their first decision was whether to build an analogue or digital mouse: “We chose to design an analogue mouse because we thought we would learn more from the experience. A digital system would have involved less components and so reduce the weight. This would have given us a faster mouse from the beginning, but we wanted to work on something that would really make us think as a group.”

Joshua’s mouse contained a sensor to detect an electric current running through the centre of the 20m track. It navigated ascending and descending ramps and bends to finish the course in 14.34 seconds (a top 10 finish).

The best part of the project for Joshua was working as part of a team: “I really enjoyed exploring my strengths and skillsets, while learning from my team members. It was really interesting to work with people who have different personalities. Respecting the views of others and reasoning with differing opinions to come to a conclusion helped me to see the bigger picture.”

The project is also an opportunity to develop a range of hard and soft skills: “Working on the project gave me an insight into the professional world: the art of liaising with technical and non-technical professionals. This has helped my communication skills. I learnt a lot about time management, planning and goal setting, as well as practical elements like soldering.”
