THE COMMONWEALTH FOR AFRICA 2020 took place in MIDDLESBROUGH, TEESIDE on FRIDAY THE 6TH OF MARCH and SATURDAY THE 7TH OF MARCH 2020

The two day event attracted a host of amazing audiences from London, Milton Keynes, Newcastle , Bradford, Watford, Leeds, Wakefield and different parts of the country .
The event was inspired by Comr Olalekan Odedeyi with a vision to bring various communities together with the theme of focusing on ” African Community prospects and beyond “.

Farouk Adegboyega Agoro is an artist and architect based in Brixton, London. Originally born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria to a Nigerian father and Jamaican mother, he moved to England as a young teenager to attend school. Farouk’s parents studied in the USA in the 1960-70s before returning to Nigeria to settle and he was greatly influenced by their music, art and literature collections from that period.  His father, now a retired town planner, was always sketching and doodling while his mother, a retired pharmacist, is still very crafty – crocheting, sewing, making dolls, quilts, bags etc… Farouk was surrounded by a lot of creativity which guided him towards him pursuing architecture as a career.

He has been working as an architect for over 12 years and has been painting on and off during that period. With a desire to pursue other creative projects, he decided to divert more attention in the past three years to his passion for painting as a form of expression.

Ibim Banigo Fapohunda – Former Director, Save The Woman

Ibim is an international Engineering Management professional driven by her passion to contribute to the betterment of lives around her and empower people to build a sustainable future for themselves – through health, education, public administration, infrastructure, trade and such like development initiatives.

From her institutional appointment in 2007 as International Students Officer at the University of Birmingham to her Sub-Saharan Business Development corporate assignment from 2012 to 2017, Ibim has actively participated in social development initiatives in the UK and across several second and third world territories.

Ibim describes some of her most memorable life experiences from 2008 to date as the opportunity to be part of overseas missions teams in Eastern Africa and Eastern Europe – building homes for families, teaching school children, working in household farms and living with local families during these missions were remarkable experiences that resonates greatly with Ibim’s passion to impact lives.

Ibim held the position of Chair and Member of Save the Woman’s Board of Trustees from 2017 to 2019.

Currently, alongside her role since 2010 as a UK Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ‘STEM’ Ambassador – actively educating children and young people of the vital roles STEM play in our world; Ibim holds the position of Non-Exec Director of This Is Us ‘TIU’ UK – a UK non-profit organization aimed at collaborating with communities to practically address health and social issues affecting young people, thus enabling the realization of their full potential as future world changers.

Councillor Favour Ezeifedi will be one of The Key Speakers at The Commonwealth for Africa 2020 taking place at Middlesvbrough.   Information about her can be found below

 Councillor Favour Ezeifedi–A passionate Campaigner for Equality and Fairness.

Favour is a social worker, a councillor and a mother.

Overcoming adversity and challenges in herpersonal and professional life enabled her to understand the needs of the less privileged and inspired her desire to contribute to making a difference.

Before migrating to the UK through the Highly Skilled Work Permit, Favour hada very successful career in telecommunication working across African countries.

Having witnessed first-hand the level of injustice and deprivation within struggling families in a local Watford school where she as a school governor,Favour was determined to change this narrative. This led her to become deeply involved in her local community through various voluntary organisations and faith groups. She quickly became an advocate for other parents and a role model in the community.

Favour has worked as a front line social work in many local authorities including Brent, Hillingdon and Hertfordshire County Council. Favour is the Chief Executive Officer of a social work consultancy group: http://www.destinycreationsgroup.org

Barry Coppinger – Police & Crime Commissioner, Cleveland Police

Barry Coppinger was first elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland on 22 November 2012. He was re-elected by the people of Cleveland on 5 May 2016 for a further four years.

He has worked in the steel industry, when first leaving school; later in public sector finance, where he gained an accountancy qualification; and in helping develop community businesses at a local enterprise agency.

He brings to the role a long track record of public service, including wide experience of policing and public protection services. He served as a local councillor for 28 years and has held numerous posts including Executive Member for Public Protection, Chair of a Crime and Disorder Partnership and of the Cleveland Joint Emergency Planning Committee, as well as serving as a member of the former police authority.

In 2019, Barry played a central role in introducing Cleveland Police Positive Recruitment Roadshow, with focus to engage African, Asian and Minority Ethnic (AAME) communities directly, to encourage and support application for the role of police constable.

Barry also introduced Neighbourhood Policing in Cleveland and has experience of developing a wide range of public protection and community safety projects.   He has built a wide range of political and professional contacts over many years, working with many residents and community groups on which he has built a wide-ranging 53 point Police & Crime Plan for the Cleveland area, which he is focussed on implementing.

 A lifelong Teessider, he is married with 2 sons and in his spare time enjoys walking, cycling and sampling local produce and culture.

Luke Pottage – Teesside University Graduate
Luke studied at Teesside University, graduated with a first-class honours degree in Business Management in 2018. During his studies, he took an active role in a project with County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service to address the fight for equality that women  are facing in the fire and rescue services industry.

The experiences that Luke gained  throughout this project fuelled his desire to promote equality in whatever way possible.
In 2019, Luke was given the opportunity to return to Teesside University for three months as  a Graduate Intern in the Student Recruitment & Marketing department. In his first week,  Luke met with the CEO of Save The Woman. Following this meeting, Luke helped to organise  the Commonwealth for Africa 2019 event held on the final day of Luke’s internship. Despite  leaving the University, Luke remains in contact with the Save the Woman and is a supporter  of the Teesside African and African Caribbean Network events and what they stand for.
Currently, Luke works in finance in a young, growing company called Para-Sols. Para-Sols’ employees come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are doing their bit to improve the  future of financial services, one step at a time.
