POETRY CORNER, “THIS MAN OF OSAYE”, WRITTEN BY KENNETH CHRISTIE – ATITI

THIS MAN OF OSAYE

there was a certain man of Osaye
who loved to dance,
and dance he would
to the forest of eni’karo:
this man of Osaye

he so loved to dance
that one day he met erhimwin’otor
beyond the far post
of aguedion:
this man of Osaye

there the spirits
danced with him
there the winds swayed
to his swift feet

this man of Osaye

and birds vomited
rhythmic shadows
as the grounds bent
to the gaily steps
of him who joined
the winds at will

this man of Osaye

the man danced and danced
and became the dance
and the spirit,
who once taken
stayed like breezing breath

this man of Osaye

he had drank from winds
and smoky pathways
where he sweetly left again
to farming lands
as he continued to roar dust
and unseen steps
from his warring feet
then unknown

this man of Osaye

and who says
when we pour libations,
only the ancestors lick their mouths
in anticipation
-of dying deities
and beggarly elements?

he had died
by the dance of the spirits:
this man of Osaye
he had drank
from the libation spot
where the dead
drum for the living
to openly dance
in the swinging automatics
of incomplete cowries
and fated ends:
this man of Osaye

he had become
a thundering lion
to only followed
the spirits’ dance away:
this man of Osaye

and at the hunter’s
aiming shout,
the dance became
a predator-god
who wears
the spirit’s mask
with this man of Osaye

and he lurched
at the threshing floor
from the willing hand
of the palm-wine’s blood:
this man of Osaye
when he sank
like shadow’s thread
in sweat’s pretense
of tricky coutre-passing
through same holes
of broken shells
and whiskers pulled:
this man of Osaye

for he had come
face to face
with the drying milk
from many mortal breasts
still in his dance of spirits

this man of Osaye

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT, CELEBRATING THE MUSICAL LEGACY OLIVER MTUKUDZI FROM ZIMBABWE

Mtukudzi began performing in 1977 when he joined the Wagon Wheels, a band which featured Zimbabwean legend Thomas Mapfumo. Their single, “Dzandimomotera,” went gold and Tuku’s first album followed, which was also a major success. Mtukudzi is also a contributor to Mahube, Southern Africa’s ‘supergroup’.

With his husky voice, he has become the most recognized voice to emerge from Zimbabwe and onto the international scene and he has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond. A member of Zimbabwe’s KoreKore tribe, he sings in the nation’s dominant Shona language along with Ndebele and English. He also incorporates elements of different musical traditions, giving his music a distinctive style, known to fans as “Tuku Music”. Mtukudzi has had a number of tours around the world. He has been on several tours in the UK, USA and Canada to perform for large audiences.

Unlike Mapfumo, Mtukudzi has refrained from directly criticizing the repressive government of President Robert Mugabe, perhaps because he still lives in the country. However, some of his most emotive hits prodded the aging authoritarian ruler, including “Ndakuvara,” which bemoans the political violence engineered by Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party and “Wasakara (You Are Getting Old),” which most Zimbabweans took as a direct plea for Mugabe to retire.

He is the father of five children and has two grandchildren, two of whom are also musicians.

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT, CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF THE AMAZING BONGOS IKWUE

Bongos Ikwue, the music legend was born in Otukpo, Benue State, Nigeria, on the 6th of June 1942. In 1956, he attended St, Paul’s Secondary school in Zaria, Nigeria, where his friends called him “Forge” because he was always making up (forging) and singing his own songs. In 1962, While at Okene Comprehensive Secondary School, he formed a group called Cubana Boys with two other young boys, after which he headed off to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), also in Zaria, Kaduna State, where he studied Business Administration.

While in ABU, he created his own band, called UniBello Brothers and also sang in a folk group, which was made up of university lecturers during which time, a chemistry lecturer, Mrs. Harmony taught him some Irish songs. In 1967 he founded and headed the Groovies band, which became extremely popular in the 1970’s through to the 80’s.

Many love him for his soulful, folksy songs, the most popular of which includes: Cockcrow At Dawn, Still Searching, Amen, Otachikpokpo and a host of others. His dedication to his music was obvious due to the high quality of the albums he churned out, and due to the sheer elegance and the electrifying energy of his live performances, where the band was always on key, and the musician himself was always true to every note. His ability to stay on the right note is an indicator of his hard work as a musician.

Apart from the raw beauty of his finely honed voice, another thing that set the musical genius apart is his dedication to the promotion of Africa and African values, by his continuous use of his native Idoma language in his songs. He is well loved by a vast majority of Nigerians with a fan base that cuts across language barriers and ethnic tension; he also has an international fan base. This is mainly because Bongos’ music genre is not easily deciphered. He is also a master of the African ideals he chooses to express.

Bongos Ikwue was always original; he never tried to imitate any artist, local or international and focused on perfecting his chosen genre. He takes his time in the studio in order to affect the perfect melody for his songs, often rewriting his music until it was exactly right. The icon never rushed to produce any song and it is this conscientiousness that ensured that he produced hit after hit without fail.

Watch out for Prince Ihenacho’s new title ‘Our World In Metaphors’ which is ‘Driven by the Truth’ due out in April 2017 and see our world as you have never seen or known it before. In this new book he promises to show his readers the reasons why our world is malfunctioning. He states that, there are three stages of nurturing every human being has to go through in order to become ‘rational.’

Prince Ihenacho writes that, human beings in unison with other animals are born irrational and will remain irrational until the third stage of nurturing takes place. He says that, being rational is not an offering of nature therefore, being rational is not a given.

Prince Ihenacho argues that, human beings merely assume to be rational but the reality he says, is different because; some people only stop at one of the two first stages ‘nurtured to do domestic and self-care tasks’ or ‘nurtured to go through the human designed academic system.’ Others achieve the two but, both stages do not get rid of the animalistic instincts in human beings hence; many believe that a chaotic world is ‘natural’ and there is not much anyone can do about it.
