ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK, BENJAMIN OKON NYONG – YOUTH AND CULTURE AMBASSADOR

Benjamin Okon Nyong holds a degree of Bachelor of Art in Linguistics and Communication Studies, Calabar, he has special interest in Efik Phonology and Morphology, with several unpublished works to his credit. He is a two time awardee of the Obong of Calabar Scholarship foundation for study and researches in the Efik Language.

Ben, is passionate about youth mentorship and leadership. He has trained Secondary school students on English Phonetics in his community and mentors young undergraduate on how to apply their theoretical Linguistic knowledge on solving community related problems, three of whom received award of excellence by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria.

He heads a team of young language activists in Calabar who are working towards the preservation of Cross River state culture by documenting Proverbs of its communities. Currently, they are working on the documentation of 10,000 Efik proverbs. He volunteers for the Education Committee of the Efik Leadership Foundation and was part of the team that reviewed the text “The Efik Language” by F.X Una. He has contributed to several Efik texts for secondary schools.

An area of his research interest also covers basic phonological analysis of selected languages in Cross River State. He is also interested in Nigerian Sign Language and works with Save the Deaf and Endangered Language Initiative (S-Deli) http://www.s-deli.org as the head of Research and Outreaches, Bauchi state Nigeria.

Currently, he is serving his Country, Nigeria under the compulsory NYSC scheme at the State Data Unit/ICT department of The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) Bauchi.
