The Senegalese Community Leeds organisation was established in February 2020…… The Executive Bureau’s aim is to bring our community together to promote and maintain our rich , unique cultural beliefs and traditions by organising social and religious activities , identify areas where help and support is needed within our community.
We raise awareness and, encourage our community to get involved with services available in and around the city we live in ,a positive way to integrate , improve lives and create opportunities for a better future.
This year the Senegalese Community in Leeds have achieved the following –
• Organised a bowling activity for the children and young people
. • Supported parents to access free on line education for children getting ready for exams.
• Accessed vouchers so that some of our community could receive free electricity and gas vouchers.
• Created ,Shared and distributed Foodbank and are still continuing to do so .
• Attended meetings with other community groups, and share the information with our community.
• Displayed cultural and traditional items from Senegal for Refugee week, City of Sanctuary 2023 at Leeds Playhouse.
• Participated in Leeds City of Culture 2023 Event at Leeds City Market showing traditional and cultural items made in Senegal. • Observed Ramadan and celebrated both Eid’s as a community..
• Attended this year’s, Leeds International African Arts Festival and Awards Event.
• Screened a 1968 Senegalese Movie by Ousmane Sembène called Mandabi . The Lord Mayor Councillor Al Garthwaite and her team were invited and attended our screening .The event was supported by Hyde Park Picture House .
• Attending Hyde Park Picture House, reopening event and their permit strand of Cinema Africa showing ,regular African films.
• As part of Black History Month, an invitation to be part of the Africa4you Awards Ceremony in The Banqueting Hall, City Hall Bradford on Friday 27th October 2023 where the Senegalese Community Leeds will showcase a display of traditional and cultural items and will also be doing free tastings at the event. We are currently discussing and planning –
• A children’s and young people’s activity. • Parents and Carers Forum. • Registration as a charity. • Foodbank sharing. • Fund raising event . • Updating our Social media network.

WE HAVE BEEN ORGANISING BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATIONS AT THE UK HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT SINCE 2013.
Shahid is Senior Research Fellow in the ActEarly Collaboratory with a special interest in citizen science and co-production. Prior to joining BIHR he held several posts in both the voluntary and statutory sector to drive forward the engagement and involvement agenda. In 2015 Shahid was the winner of Bradford’s Community Star Award for outstanding services to the voluntary sector and in 2021 he won the Chief Scientific Officer’s Excellence in Healthcare Science Research and Innovation Award.
He has led on the ‘co-production’ of the ‘co-production strategy’ which has been implemented across the health sector and he describes his role as community activism through applied research.

Experience the flavours and traditions of West Africa at THE JOLLOF RICE FESTIVAL taking place at 23 High Street, Stockport SK1 1EG on Saturday the 21st of October from 4pm to 7pm- FREE ENTRY
Date: Saturday 4 November 2023 Time: 10am to 4pm Venue: Victoria Hall, Keighley. Cost:£3 online each or 6 for £12 or £5 on the door.
The festival has complementary health practitioners and stalls, most with taster sessions and samples to buy on the day.
Entry includes all the talks and workshops such as yoga, cocao and a giant 10 minute sound bath at 3.50pm. It does not include the full 45 minute sound bath workshop which is paid for on the door before entering the session. Want to book a stall?
FAMILY FUN! The venue is next to the Leisure Centre with limited vouchers available for swimming, sauna or access to the gym and there will be a free bouncy castle for small children.
We are currently in talks with the local authority to help us make this an even more family orientated event and community festival with food stalls and other play activities outside the venue.

Wednesday the 4th of October 2023 was a very special day in The City of Bradford as BRADFORD 4 BETTER ORGANISATION (ITV NATIONAL DIVERSITY AWARDS WINNERS) were on a mission to make a huge difference in the amazing city of Bradford by organising A BIG CLEAN UP CAMPAIGN at THE CENTENARY SQUARE, CENTRAL BRADFORD.
For every long time, BRADFORD 4 BETTER ORGANISATION has played a very profound role in making BRADFORD a better place through a variety of ongoing campaigns from Environmental Health, Youth Empowerment, Social well being and constantly engaging and collaborating with local community groups to improve the lives of Bradfordians.
The Big Clean up campaign started of at 5pm with some inspirational talks by local community leaders as well as opening remarks by The Chairman of the organisation -Dr Sohail Ahmed.
SKY MAX TV was also in attendance to cover the event and provide video footage.
The clean up initiative was a successful evening which attracted local community groups, volunteers, Proud Bradfordians and residents who are very passionate about A BETTER BRADFORD.
