ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK – MARCIA JOHNSON- BORN TO WIN AND SHINE – (A MUST READ STORY)

Marcia was born London in 1962 to Jamaican parents. At age 10 Marcia’s mother left the family home to pursue a life in Europe. This was a devastating blow to the family and Marcia’s father found the situation a huge challenge and often times he was not on hand..and as such there was little to nostability at home for Marcia and her two siblings.

Marcia had no role models or mentors to help talk her through the rights of passage usually shared with parents such as, puberty and the rudiments of interpersonal relationships this left Marcia riddled with feelings of self doubt that would plague her into later years and which would often manifest itself as an inner voice telling her that she was “no good” or “not good enough ”.

At age 16 Marcia met a young man and fell in love for the first time and she also fell pregnant. Being a humanitarian at heart Marcia was desperate to know the right thing to do. With nowhere else to turn she cried out to God one night and believes that she was guided to bear the child and that is what she did still with no mother or father, uncle or aunt, cousin to lean on. Then another blow.

When she was six months pregnant the father of the child died in hospital of a congenital heart condition.

Pregnant, isolated and heart-broken she contemplated taking her own life while looking over the balcony on the fifth floor of a council block but at the last minute she believes again that she was guided not to do such a thing. The child then became her reason to live in the proceeding years.

Fast forward a couple of years and Marcia felt that she had missed out on much of her personal growth and development so she set about catching up on her education by attending colleges to study O, A levels and other qualifications. She then discovered and became a voracious reader of personal development books: The Magic of Thinking Big, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, 38 Laws of Power, Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Secret, The Tipping Point, FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY etc.

In the 90’s Marcia realised that she had talent as an actor. She soon acquired her Equity card and was a jobbing actor on TV, film and stage. She enjoyed singing and jumped at the chance when offered a record deal with Polydor Records in Paris and she was in France every weekend touring, shooting videos and recording songs in the studio. She toured all over France including a radio interview with Radio Monte Carlo and taught herself to speak French she also was invited to do a European tour with The Night Trains on the Acid jazz label and a track that she wrote “Don’t Try It” went to No1. in the New York Club chart for six weeks.

In the early 2000 she set up and co-ran a recording studio and music and media production company Plutonium Rock signing and producing other artists and found herself travelling to the South of France to the big music and media festivals (Midem and Cannes) to promote the artists. Marcia would wake up at 3am to run to the call box (her phone was disconnected!) where she brokered deals with Japanese and other record labels she met at the Music Festivals in Cannes to buy her product.

Some time later, when the music industry and labels as we knew them became eroded by the internet it was all change again so she set up a property company and opened an office near her home on the New Kings Road in Chelsea, London where she negotiated property rentals and acquiring property on behalf of clients brokering deals with large estate agents and property developers in London and abroad.

Marcia always felt the fear but did all of those things in spite of it. She also realised that being happy is a choice and believes that the body can produce “happy” cells that permeate and preserves the mind and body and encourages a positive spirit. Marcia is a qualified Property Professional, NLP practitioner and Co-Owner at Ulumma-B Restaurant and Bar in North London. When Marcia’s mother eventually returned to London, some 20 years later for good, the family welcomed her with open arms and she resides in London today. Marcia continues to be a work in progress and wishes to help others overcome their perceptual challenges to achieve a place of calm in their lives and to achieve their personal and business goals.

ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK- EJAY IKONNEH- CEO OF ULUMMA-B NIGERIAN AND IGBO RESTAURANT

John Junior Ikonneh Son of John and Maria Ulumma Ikonneh and the youngest of their six children. Born in the United Kingdom in 1967 John has lived a quite textured life. He was a singer and actor and writer in the early 80s. In the late 80s early 90s he ran a comedy club with his cousin before that he mentored young people and became a youth worker, working in Hackney, Harlesden and Kilburn. In 1992 he organised a live show at a world famous venue in the heart of Hackney.

He had an idea to have a 3 panel Judge system, of which he was one, to determine which artists, singers, dancers and performers in Hackney would grace the stage of the live show. The word go out and we had queues of people around the country and neighbouring boroughes coming to audition to win a spot on the live show at the Hackney Empire (this idea would never catch on) The show was a success because at that time we were living in Thatchers’ Britain where unemployment was a high a 67% of black youth unemployment compared to 37% white youth unemployment.

Around 1999 John arranged his own work experience with Hackney council as time became financially tough for him and I.T was the new black. He offered what little knowledge he had gathered about I.T after doing a failed course in MCSE Microsoft Certificate. After redefining the meaning of failure to “oops” it was time for a new strategy to get up to that mountain. Although John had an ability called Dyslexia his thinking modality was never designed for theory based learning.

It was very much role up your sleeves and get elbow deep for total accumulation and emersion of learning. Learning was difficult for John because he always saw learning as a punishment. His father was a violent man when he was child. His father would beat or punish him for playing and used books as a way of stopping his fun. So the association of fun, enjoyment and freedom was shut down with “Have you read your books” or “Go read your books” or his fathers favourite catch-phase “Go to the garden and bring me a stick” As much as we today can talk about black families and fathers beating their children and laugh about it. His rage and violence left lasting psychological problems to his two older brothers. One of which he no longer speaks to.

It was God’s Grace and Mercy as to why he survived the mental torture. The need to serve others was born out of the loneliness of Childhood. As he grew up he wondered if other people had experienced what I had endured. The isolation and fear, confused identity being a British born Igbo, who lived in three worlds. First world his fathers house in Hackney was Igbo land. Second World United Kingdom at School and third world when he was in neither situation. They had but not like Johns’.

In 2004 John discovered NLP and Hypnotherapy. He trained as a Hypnotherapist in 2005 and helped many people. It was a rewarding experience and he soon entered the world of personal development. He still helps people today where he can. The Birth of Ulumma-B The Nigerian Igbo Restaurant and Bar is an opportunity to serve, to be kind, to be welcoming and to set a standard by which all African Restaurant can follow so that All African Restaurant can be a might force in the Catering market in the UK and Europe.
