AN EVENING WITH ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT – BY TONY TOKUNBO FERNANDEZ

Thursday the 1st of June 2023 was a very historical day for hundreds of music lovers in the heart of Bradford and all over the country.

Not only was it a special day that marked 30 years of the Legendary track by two time Grammy Award WinnersARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, it was also the celebration of a philosophical and musical legacy, blessed with the force of an afro-centric fusion that had captured the hearts of many people around the world into a unique and poetic way of creating music.

It was also the first time for me to meet the Legendary Speech in person- THE FOUNDER OF ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and engage him into a lengthy interview for the benefit of our online audiences around the world.

The meeting took place at The Underground, Duke Street in Bradford and was made possible by Gail.

I was accompanied by a good friend, JERRY CRAWFORD (who continues to do great work in Bradford)

As we arrived the venue, I walked up to SPEECH and gave him a hug, I thanked him for all the great contributions that he had made to the music industry over the years. He was warm, extremely down to earth and philosophical.

My mind raced back to the legacies that Arrested Development had created to the music industry for many years and the memories they had created and painted with a musical revolution like no other.

It was evening filled with words of wisdom, personal stories , beautiful moments and a historical day that will always live through the depth of my heart.

ABOUT ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

True Hip-hop trailblazers since 1991, Arrested Development has been cultural champions of consciousness and empowerment across the planet. Their representation of eclectic and vibrant African sounds and clothing has produced a unique clash of rhythms and style that continue to contrast the expected look and sound of Hip-hop culture.

Arrested Development have been supporters of important groups and movements like the National Coalition of The Homeless, and the African National Congress (ANC).

With numerous album releases, and world tours, Arrested Development has been ground-breaking in Hip-hop culture. Their album, “3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of…”, earned them two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Rap Single (Tennessee), 2 MTV awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and the NCAAP Image Award. Rolling Stone magazine named them Band of The Year in 1992, while VH-1 named them one of the greatest Hip-hop artists of all time! The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame even named the AD smash “Tennessee” one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. Sharing the stage with such important figures such as Nelson Mandela, Minister Louis Farrakhan, Hilary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, AD are the categorical definition of legends.

The band continues their forward march of curating great music that is about self reflection and igniting change. Their new album, ‘For the FKN Love’ is no exception.  The 17-track album features a selection of legendary musicians including, Big Daddy Kane, The Sugar Hill Gang, Masta Ace & Monie Love and is executively produced by Speech for Vagabond Productions and Configa.  ‘For the FKN Love’ brings incomparable positive lyricism, storytelling, and cognizant awareness delivered in a fashion only Arrested Development can carry through!
