ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK, ESTHER STANFORD-XOSEI, INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED JURISCONSULT , POLICY ANALYST & BROADCASTER

Esther Stanford-Xosei Bio

Esther Stanford-Xosei is a jurisconsult, community advocate, specialising in the critical legal praxis of ‘law as resistance’ and internationally acclaimed Reparationist. With a proven track record as a law related education and training consultant, Esther has extensive experience of formulating reparative policy and programme interventions as well as developing specialist advocacy services for communities who are survivors of historical and contemporary trauma as a result of systematic violations of their human and peoples’ rights.

Esther has charted new grounds, as an interdisciplinary legal and history scholar-activist in the theory, research and praxis of Pan-Afrikan Reparations for Global Justice. Most notably, she is a long-standing researcher, campaigner, spokesperson and public opinion former on holistic reparations for Afrikans and their descendants worldwide. In this regard, Esther is a founder member and the Co-Vice Chair of the Pan-Afrikan Reparations Coalition of Europe (PARCOE), co-founder of the Global Afrikan Peoples Parliament (GAPP), the Afrikan Reparations Transnational Community of Practice (ARTCoP) and the Europe-Wide NGO Consultative Council on Afrikan Reparations (ENGOCCAR). She is also the official spokesperson for the Afrikan Emancipation Day Reparations March Committee (AEDRMC) which organises the annual 1st August Reparations March in London. In addition, Esther is the co-initiator of the ‘Stop the Maangamizi: We Charge Genocide/ Ecocide’ Petition and its campaign (SMWeCGEC). Notably, the SMWeCGEC includes calls for the establishment of All-Party Parliamentary Commissions of Inquiry for Truth & Reparatory Justice at the levels of the Westminster and European Parliaments as well as the establishment of local, national and international benches of the Ubuntukgotla Peoples International Tribunal for Global Justice as an alternative form of dispute resolution and adjudication of Arikan people’s judiciable demands for ‘Stopping the Maangamizi’ (Afrikan hellacaust) and enforcing holistic forms of reparatory justice.

As a result of Esther’s community engaged reparations scholar-activism, she is currently completing PhD action research in history at the University of Chichester on the history of the UK contingent of the International Social Movement for Afrikan Reparations (ISMAR) which ‘recovers’ the history of Afrikan & Afrikan Diaspora reparations thought, advocacy and social-movement-building in the UK from the 18th century to the present day. On behalf of PARCOE, Esther is currently involved as an activist partner in the founding process of the newly emergent International Network of Scholar Activists on Afrikan Reparations (INOSAAR) which is a collaborative project that is being coordinated by the University of Edinburgh (UK) and Wheelock College (Boston, US).The INOSAAR seeks to unite the efforts of scholars and activists in a combined quest to contribute positively to advancing the question of reparations for Afrikan enslavement and promotes a non-extractive process of ethical scholarship that recognizes the existence of a grassroots International Social Movement for Afrikan Reparations (ISMAR) to which scholars and activists are accountable. Esther is also a co-founder of ISMARA (ISMAR Academy) which in association with the SMWeCGEC and the ARTCoP supports the holistic education and training of reparations cadres in service to advancing the goals of the ISMAR. Such as the establishment of MAAATUBUNTUMAN, the future Pan-Afrikan Union of Communities into a sovereign multi-ethnic superpowerful-state of true participatory democracy of Afrikan people at home and abroad. MAATUBUNTUMAN is meant for Afrikan people all over the World who, since the 1884-5 ‘Scramble for Afrika’ Berlin Congress, have been feeling betrayed, alienated from and unrepresented by the artificial puppet-states of European imperialist balkanization which have been continuing the perpetration of the Maangamizi and its heinous Crimes against Humanity.
Recognition of Esther’s contribution to reparations scholar-activism can be found in a biographical book chapter about her as she in ‘The Most Influential Contemporary Diaspora Leaders’ (2016) edited by Dr Roland Holou as well as inclusion of her activism in the book chapter ‘African Descendant Women and the Global Reparations Movement’ by Professor Adjoa A. Aiyetoro in Black Women and International Law (2015) edited by Dr Jeremy I. Levitt.

“TENETS OF BLISS ” WRITTEN BY CHIGBO UZOKWELU

While virtually everybody would gladly embark on a marital journey, many people sadly do so without any idea on how to manage conflicts. When a man and woman live together in close proximity as is the case in the modern era, CONFLICTS are bound to arise. The way and manner they handle the brouhaha will determine the outcome of the marriage or relationship.

Do they sit down to talk things over, knowing that life is all about give and take? Do they flex their muscles and resort to exchange of blows? The choice is theirs! However when husband and wife fight each other, there is no winner. There are just 2 lousy losers, palpitating towards their precipice unaware of the impending calamity.

No man ever marries a woman so as to batter her to stupor and no woman ever marries a man so as to verbally abuse him to nothingness but along the way things happen and the race to Armageddon commences. But this never happen overnight and that is why it is highly advisable that all marriages and relationships should be equipped with early warning system with detective mechanisms.

Couple who establish clear rules on how to manage their conflicts will continue to re-invent their marital bliss. No matter what, family life must never be allowed to grind to a halt. Even when there is cold war or the rage is livid, both the man and woman must continue to perform their respective duties. Father must not withhold the funds, if he is the breadwinner and the wife must endeavour to serve pudendum no matter the urge to become stingy with it as punitive measures.

It is sad to note that many cohabiting partners now go to the gym to acquire the necessary muscles for a free for all fight between the couple, but is this what marriage is all about? Of what use is it for you to win all the arguments but then lose your spouse?

Marriage can be a very beautiful adventure. But it up to the parties involved to make that happen. If they get things right, they will enthrone a wonderful marital bliss but if they get it wrong, they will experience that hell a person can see before the other one.

“SUNSET OF LIFE ” WRITTEN BY CHIGBO UZOKWELU

Everybody who enjoys a long life will ultimately retire one day from work and it is incumbent on us all to plan towards a befitting retirement and old age era.

While we are still young, we can all dress up and go where we like but a day will come when others will dress us up and take us where we don’t want to go.

In the past, a parent nurtures and brings up a kid with the full realization that the child will in the future return the favor by taking care of the aged parent. But today times have changed and as a person makes his or her bed so shall the person lie on it.

Every wise parent will not want to overburden the child when the chips are down as the journey is made towards the sunset of earthly sojourn.

It therefore pays to make hay while the sun shines. Elderly people who enjoy their retirement era in today’s world are usually the ones that undertake decisive planning in youthful days.

And for those who have been oblivious of this truism today is still time to do the needful as we all journey towards the sunset of life.

“MANAGING STRESS LEVEL” WRITTEN BY CHIGBO UZOKWELU

It is true that the level of stress plaguing people in today’s world has reached an unprecedented level. The death arising from this ugly reality has reached an alarming crescendo.

Naturally all kinds of technological devices have been developed to make our everyday schedules more manageable but still our lives are as stressed up as anybody can think of.

People that master the art of managing their time effectively will always be a step ahead. Unfortunately this is an area that has been established as a typical person’s Achilles heel. We all love to procrastinate and suddenly it dawns that we are unable to meet up with the daily activities. Panic sets in thus spiraling the stress level out of proportions. So my advice is that we should all plan well. We should learn how to embrace effective time keeping and management. The best type of improvisation can only be achieved with careful planning.

Another important advice is that every person should learn how to listen to his or her own body and take proactive and credible steps to nurture both the mind and body to an optimal level. With the body, what you put in, is what you get out. Eating proper food and balanced meal will go a long way. Getting adequate sleep will do wonders.

Everybody needs to find the best way to unwind and relax. Sadly the only relaxation many people embrace is consumption of too much liquor and fatty cuisines which unfortunately can only offer momentary pleasure but long standing and life changing monumental agony. Diabetes set in, blood pressure shoot up, the liver get messed up. The heart is undermined and the consequent deterioration of health is better left imagined.

Exercise is good and provides a viable way to keep body and soul intact. Everybody should find the type that works. If done well and regularly it reduces the stress level and gets a person better equipped to meet his or her daily challenges.

“SAVING OUR GOOD OLD AFRICA” WRITTEN BY CHIGBO UZOKWELU

Africa despite her enormous population is largely a consuming continent. Therefore any policy that is aimed at weaning the populace from the unbecoming consuming appetite will reduce unnecessary capital flight from the continent. The manufacturing sector needs to be rejigged and revived from deep slumber and squalor to usher in a prosperous chapter of self-sufficiency.

There are so much able bodied Africans without any outlet to release their ubiquitous energy. Job creation will work wonders. A person who goes to work to ply his trade or services can only come home tired, thus having no more energy to commit crime or foment mischief. This way a glorious circle of job creation, wealth generation and crime eradication can be attained with the high quality of life and improved living conditions that come with that.

No denying that problems abound all over Africa and we must devise creative ways to solve our problems But I remain ever suspicious of using direct labour approach as a model for rural and urban development. For example, try to fix and tar a road using direct labour and you will discover the effort will be mired in substandard and uneven performance controversies. Workers will be under paid, motivation will be low and the overall delivery will be lackluster because of the obsession to keep cost down.

Malaria is still wrecking havoc all over Africa but eradicating malaria via killing off all mosquitoes will portend disastrous and devastating consequences to mankind. Granted that the Malaria parasite is ferried around by female anopheles mosquitoes but should we kill off all mosquitoes for the acts of a negligible minority? Many people fail to realize that Mosquitoes, like all other life forms, are part of a complex food web. Many fishes feed on mosquito larvae, which are aquatic, and plenty of birds and spiders and other insects feed on the adults. Dragonflies and damselflies love mosquitoes. Frogs eat adult mosquitoes, tadpoles eat the larvae.

The harm caused by the female anopheles mosquito pales into insignificance when juxtaposed with the tremendous benefits that come from all the mosquito species. In the same token, kill off all the bees or even reduce their population and the world will go hungry because there will be nobody to do the cross pollination for crops or produce honey for dietary and medicinal purposes. No matter what anyone feels about the mosquito, kindly note that they also deserve to live and that on this earth, we are all inter-connected.

THE NIDO HOUSING INVESTMENT SUMMIT TAKES PLACE IN LISBON, PORTUGAL FROM THE 9TH -11TH OF NOVEMBER

Nigerians In Diaspora Organization (NIDO) Housing Investment Summit taking place in Lisbon – Portugal from November 9 – 11, 2017 at the Sana Metropolitan Hotel. This investment summit will be taking place simultaneously with the NIDO European Annual General Meeting (AGM). I hope to have the privilege to introduce “VISION 105” to the House via the AGM Committee. Even though local and foreign developers have executed and commissioned numerous construction projects across the country in recent years, the supply of affordable housing remains more than 17 million less of current demand. Just imagine 17 million Nigerians in Diaspora investing 1 Euro a month for one year! From VISION 105 perspective, remittance has a huge role to play in bolstering the real estate market in Nigeria and the time is now.
