ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK, GEORGINA NDUKWE-EZEANYIKA OF SILVERBIRD NEWS 24, ABUJA

BIOGRAPHY: GEORGINA NDUKWE-EZEANYIKA

My name is Georgina Ndukwe-Ezeanyika, I currently work as a senior Correspondent, Reporter and Newscaster with Silverbird News24, Abuja.

Asides from reading the news on Silverbird Television and on Rhythm 94.7FM, I produce and present a live programme on Silverbird Television that focuses on the activities at the Nigerian Assembly titled “From the National Assembly” and on radio, i present a programme that focuses on the rights and issues concerning women titled,” Women Voices”.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria, currently studying a Master’s degree in Mass Communication with Liverpool’s John Moore University, United Kingdom.

The last thirteen plus years of my career has been centred round evidenced based information gathering, reporting and editing, presenting and anchoring programmes of national interest. I have also organised press briefings and i have a wide network in the media circle.

Before I attained this, I was a little girl, who grew up loving and listening to radio. Even though at some point I wanted to study Law, I ended up taking up Mass Communication as my first degree at the Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria, West Africa.

Right from secondary (high) school, i had already started practicing the profession as a member of Press club.  the very first day i joined the club, i was appointed the Newscaster and reporter for the entire school. My task was writing about happenings in school and reading the news before the entire school.

Being a News Anchor is something i love to do, because I grew up listening to professionals in Nigeria, the likes of late Tokunbo Ajayi, Ruth Benemesia Opia and beautiful Eugenia Abu. outside the shores of Nigeria, I love watching to Christiana Amanpour and Isa Sesay.
I started off my career by volunteering to work with a radio station, LoveFm (Formerly Crowther radio) 104.5FM in 2003, after I graduated from the University. I was waiting to be called up for a one year mandatory national service, I had to keep myself busy.
That short period of 4 to 5 months I volunteered, was the experience I needed to get my first full job with another radio station, Vision FM 92.1, Abuja in 2006 after my service year.
During my service year, I volunteered to be part of a team that administered polio and vitamin A vaccines to children under the age of five in the rural communities. in the process I learnt a little native dialect to enable me communicate easily with the people in those communities who were neither literate nor aware of the benefits of those vaccines to the health of their children so at some point we had difficulties convincing the mothers there to make their children available. however we were able to overcome that obstacle with the help of mediator.
I also had a stint working as a freelance Journalist with BBC Network Africa, Abuja office in 2007, it was a huge plus for me, because I was trained by one of the most experienced hands in Broadcasting.
That same year, I got a permanent job with Silverbird Rhythm 94.7FM as a Newscaster, Reporter, Presenter and News Editor.
What I love the most about my job is the fact that I can touch the lives of people that listen with the messages I talk about on radio and the programmes I present on television , it feels like having a virtual family and that’s awesome.
I research and produce contents that deal with social issues, current affairs and relationships. Of course it is a forum where I connect with my listeners. The fact that some young people were able to get jobs on my show, convinced me that I was doing something really very right.
I have also written feature stories which has been aired both locally and internationally.
In 2009 and 2018, I was a recipient of staff of the year award (SILVERBIRDCOMMUNICATIONS) and On-Air-Personality of the year, First runner up, in recognition of my hard work and dedication to duty. I have a flair for news reporting both for radio and Television.
I do voice overs for jingle, programes and documentaries. As amedia personality, I have had the opportunity to host one or two events in Abuja, my specialty is mostly corporate events.
My dream is to continue to be heard beyond the shores of this country, bring hope to people listening or watching, being a voice for the voiceless and making a difference in my own little way.
I  hope to establish my own broadcast outfit in the nearest future.
END

POETRY CORNER – antagonist- written by Kenneth Christie-Atiti

-antagonist-

when a horse goes wild,

the bush is silent with neighing tones

when a lion goes hunting,

a roar envelopes the jungle’s name

when the raging storm seeks solace,

there are troubles and miracles in one take

let us bleed our own blood,

to know that the seeker is also soughtour names must not be written,

to know we bear not Lucifer’s face…

and He said:”In living we must die daily.”That is what He said.

And we are all there NOW.

In a season of laugh and deathlike our hearts which should beat FOREVER…

The story of the Lantern in the Old Eastern Region and south-west Cameroon region – Philip Nosa-Adam

The story of the Lantern in the Old Eastern Region and south-west Cameroon region – Philip Nosa-Adam

Utuenikang which translates to the hurricane Lantern is a very small but significant item with a long history in the Old Eastern region and some divisions in Cameroon. The Hurricane Lantern or the Kerosene Lantern was an article of trade during the years of the transatlantic trade. It is unclear when the item may have been introduced. Although it may have been introduced during the Era of Efik-Dutch relations in the 17th century. Modern and more popular designs of the lantern were constructed later by polish inventor Ignacy Lukasiewicz in 1853.

The Lantern has similar names among several Ethnicities of the Old eastern region. Some of which include

Ohafia – UtrikangAbriba – OterikangOro – UtrikangIbibio – UtuenikangUwet – UtuenikangObanliku – ItenikangEtung – Okurikang

Among the Igbo, the lantern has three different names depending on the dialect. Central igbo use the word Mkpanaka for Lantern. Cross River Igbo use the word Utuenikang or its equivalent while some Igbo particularly those in present-day Oji River Local government area use the word Utukpe.

Interestingly, the word Utukpe has its origin in the Efik Language and is a corruption of Utue Ekpe (argiope aurantia), a large yellow striped bush spider native to the lower Cross River.

Thus, the shadow images produced when the hurricane lantern is lighted must have been likened to the colours on the spider. Within south-west cameroon, the following communities use the word “Utuenikang”Balondo (Ndian Division)Balue (Ndian Division)Ngolo (Ndian Division)Ekombe (Ndian Division)Bima (Ndian Division)Korup (Ndian Division)Batanga (Ndian Division)Bakoko (Ndian Division)Mbonge (Meme division)Bakundu (Meme division)

It is fascinating that the same word is used across several communities with a few pronunciation differences. There exists a reason for the common use of the word and it’s variations.

The hurricane lantern would likely have been obtained by a coastal community and sold to the communities in the interior. Thus, the community which first obtained the lantern would have given it an indigenous name and its name would have been adopted by nearby communities. The communities closest to the atlantic in the Old Eastern Region and the Cameroon axis include the Obolo communities (i.e Ibeno, Oron and Idua), Efik, Douala, Ijaw, Balondo etc.

The Efik being by far one of the most widely travelled West African trader in the Old Eastern Region during the years of the triangular trade would be a top contender for the origin of the name. This is further confirmed when the word “Utuenikang” is studied from an etymological perspective. In the Efik Language, Utuenikang is a conjunction of two words. “Utuene” and “Ikang”.

The latter translates to fire and the former comes from the verb “Tuene”. The verb “Tuene” first translates to, to light or to be lighted and secondly, to twinkle. Examples of sentences with the verb include:-
Tuene ikañ mi, nọ mi nkut usuñ – Show the light here for me to see my way.
Ntantaọffiọñ etuene – The stars twinkle
Like the Greek mythical figure Prometheus who is regarded as the bringer of fire, the Efik are responsible for the use of the name Utuenikañ in several Communities. It is our hope that the Efik will continue to be the importer and an inventor of more useful artefacts in the future.
