ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK , IKHUENBOR VIKRAM OSARUMEN – SPOKEN WORD ARTIST, LAWYER AND HUMANITARIAN

I am Ikhuenbor Vikram Osarumen also known as Vikram Da Ace Poet from Oredo Local Government, Benin City, Edo State. I am proudly Nigerian…..an only child between my parents and was trained solely by my mother( a single parent). I would describe myself as a visionary person whose life is motivated by a zest to be an answer to the questions of many both spiritually and physically all around the world. I am pretty emotional and usually ” fall asleep while awake,” that is to say, I experience a great dimension of God’s insight and foresight in my ministry as a spoken word poet. I hate travesty and so I always say ” The world is one big bakery, so stop all the bickering, because God the baker made us come into this world as different pastries.”

MY LIFE AS A CHILD

As a child, I grew up living a lonely life. The only friend I had then was “myself”, hence I discovered inner energy. Soon I was admitted into Garrick Primary and Secondary School, Benin City, Edo State. One situation that held me down was that, I always had the poorest result in my class and as such, became the least entertained. I grew through those formative days crestfallen because, I couldn’t measure up with my peers academically.
I remember a situation which occurred in primary 5, how that my mathematics teacher pointed to the rest of the class saying ” I see you guys going far in life,” just after I failed a question. The worse case scenario was that I couldn’t speak English at all. However in ss2, I realised those coming out tops in class didn’t have ten heads. That was when I picked up Brighter Grammar and Queens Premier in ss2 and started to burn the mid night candle. So it went that for the first time in my life, I came second in class and a year after I got admitted into Benson Idahosa University in 2007 to study law.

MY LIFE AS A LAW STUDENT

In 2007, I took a decision to brake academic records at both intra university and interuniversity competitions. I started studying beyond normal and in my 300 level, I carted away with an award of the overall best student; in 400 level I won the first National scholarship to the Nigerian Law School during the Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomole’s Moot and Mock Trials, held in the Ambrose Ali University, Edo State, Nigeria.
That same year, I won another scholarship to the Nigerian Law School from the university of Benin, as having one of the best articles amongst a group of articles sent in for scrutiny.
In 2012, I was conferred the honour of the overall best graduating law student with a G.P.A of 4.45. At this time I had published my first book entitled “The Memory of World War 11 and the ICRC.” I had become the first president of the Niger Delta Student Union Government in my school.
In 2013, I had published a comprehensive English text entitled ” The Superior Insider: The Mystics of Grammar and Phonetics Unveiled.” In 2014, I was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Solicitor/Advocate of the supreme court of Nigeria.

HOW I BECAME A SPOKEN WORD ARTIST

My success story as a spoken word poet all began in 2010 as I yearned to see world peace gain a domino effect in the comity of nations. I am a very emotional person and a deep thinker as well. Overtime, I developed a writing spirit, which propelled me to start spoken word poetry in a village called Ikpeshi, Akoko Edo Local Government, Edo State.
The depth of my spoken word poems snowballed out of solitary living. Hence, I have time to study, meditate, praying and hear from God. The exact words I hear are the spirit filled words I say on stage as spoken word poems. I have seen many lives transformed over the years under this ministry.
In 2014, I started a spoken word academy known as Ace Academy with the motto “Save the World.” The academy hosts the trending spoken word event call Speak Out Loud. It has been changing lives and sequel to that, other spoken word poets have come out amongst us, spreading the divine mandate as well. I took it as a ministry, but I became more serious when I heard the lord on the 30 April, 2016 at about 2:35am….” You will speak through times and seasons and through generations.”
From that day,  the anointing on my ministry as a spoken word poet has increased.
Finally, I became a spoken word poet due to an undying vision to bring answers to the questions of many. This is what I live for and if need be I hope to die for. The world must become a better place.

My most challenging moment

This was the day I defeated “self.”

Mission

To take the divine mandate to the ends of the earth.

POETRY CORNER , “WASH ME” WRITTEN BY KENNETH CHRISTIE-ATITI – AFRICAN THOUGHT LEADER AND POET

WASH ME
wash me
in river water
on the high hills of ancient Ikpoba

cleanse me
from these sticky myths
of a roasted ceramic body

deep me
into AFRICA-
into her pure waves
of sentient air
near running streams
and full moonshines

lead me
from these broad roads
of strangling strangers’ strenght
in spirited sweat

guide me
into twisted ‘iyekowa’ footpaths
where mothers and fathers lived
in the oneness of past and present
in savoured seasons

keep me
from these stormy breath marks
borne daily by a mixed albumen
of an AFRICAN yolked egg
who is torn between these closing
footpaths-
that once sailed us on cocoyam
leaves into folklores,
and this pouring consuming glitz
of a riddled hunger

wash me
even naked as I am-
and by that flowing tide
of the sugercane oracle,
deep me deeper still
in AFRICA’S own bossom.

FIVE GOOD REASONS TO VISIT TANZANIA

1 Be Transformed by The Magic of Tanzania, A Country Of Amazing Beauty & Matchless Wonders

Tanzania has seven official World Heritage Sites. Teeming with diverse wildlife and a spectacular sight, Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken and unflooded volcanic caldera in the world.

Serengeti is the breathtaking outback venue of the annual migration of millions of wildebeest combined with an evolutionary trip to Olduvai Gorge, Laetoli and the Kondoa Rock Art Cave Sites takes you back to your human origins. Selous, Ruaha and Katavi are unspoiled remote wildernesses, home to thousands of elephants and bovines, and packs of rare African wild dogs and other diverse predators. Lake Tanganyika is among the most beautiful lakes in the world. Lake Manyara was a personal favorite of Ernest Hemingway. Climb the Kilimanjaro on an uphill strenuous stroll, the highest mountain in Africa, shining in the morning sun above a pedestal of cloud. Trek past its glaciers to the highest peak, or peer into the magma pits of the Mountain of God – Ol Doinyo Lengai by Lake Natron. Silver beaches and limpid seas set off the wonderful Swahili architecture of

Stone Town in Zanzibar, important as a significant trading port, a heady blend of cultures and focus of the abolition of slavery. Combine Zanzibar with a history trip to Bagamoyo or even Kilwa to see the ruins of Kisiwani and Songo Mnara. Thereafter, head off to the private island of Fanjove or Lazy Lagoon for an unadulterated beach escape. Find all the fascination of African travel in the inimitable richness of Tanzania.

2 Experiential Ecotourism & Cultural Experience

AfricanMecca believes that ecotourism changes the way visitors interact with the wilderness and local communities whilst on an ethnic holiday in Tanzania. Guests are encouraged to experience Tanzania cultural tours of local villages, farms, and sustainable projects such as Swala Camp’s beekeeping in Tarangire.

They join in Maasai marriage rituals and celebrations, as at Gibb’s farm near Ngorongoro. They work together at schools like St Jude in Arusha and orphanages like that supported by Rhotia Lodge. Accommodation is often on tribal Maasai land, like Shu'mata Camp in western Kilimanjaro, hosted by the friendly and dignified Maasai tribe. They give a truly authentic Tanzanian experiential safari experience. Chumbe Island off Zanzibar is a private, non-profit ecotourism project to protect its staggeringly beautiful coral garden.

Accommodation is built from natural materials. Food is fresh and locally produced. Guests can snorkel on the reef. Disposable income funds environmental education and other benefits for local people. Chumbe uses progressive solar, photovoltaic and recycling technology to preserve this unique coral island from un- natural degradation so that the marine tour wonders of Tanzania are maintained authentically, so that they will still be here for future generations.

3 Enjoy A Distinct Indian Ocean Beach Vacation On Zanzibar Island or On the Coast Of Tanzania

There can be no divine setting for a barefoot African beach holiday or honeymoon than the exotic spice island of Zanzibar. Endless miles of unspoiled white, sandy beaches backed by lush tropical forests are lapped by the limpid azure waters of the tepid Indian Ocean.

Dive at the Mnemba coral atoll alive with jeweled fish, turtles and dolphins or snorkel at the pristine Chumbe Island Coral Park. Sail the sparkling deep seas of Pemba and Mafia, or pit yourself against hard-fighting game fish in the Nungwi waters. The entire seaboard coast of Tanzania is a feast for the senses. Dine on the succulent fruits of the sea or sample the rare and tasty shoki-shoki (rambutan), fenesi (jackfruit) and 22 varieties of bananas.

Refresh yourself with the clear madafu juice of young coconuts. Appreciate the lissome grace of the Zanzibaris and the liquid sounds of their Taarab Swahili music. Indulge in a luxury, private and rustic-chic retreat on the mainland south coast of Dar es Salaam, such as Ras Kutani, an ultimate spot for AfricanMecca seaside lovers who simply want to relax in an exotic Shangri-La rich with history and romance.

4  Relive Evolution & Primal History

In Olduvai Gorge near Ngorongoro, the Leakeys found primitive tools and fossilized bones

of the earliest men, and footprints over 3.5 million years old at Laetoli. 10,000 years ago,

the people of Tanzania were Khoisan hunter and gatherers, joined 5,000 years ago by Cushitic farmers. 2,000 years ago, Bantu tribes brought their iron-working abilities. Their rock paintings can be seen at Kola, southwest of Tarangire. Greek, Roman and Persian spice and ivory trading centers along the East Coast were later taken over by Arab slavers. Stone Town in Zanzibar, where slave prisons can still be seen, encapsulates all these influences.

In this heady mix, Swahili civilization flourished from Unguja to Kilwa until Portugal, Belgium, Germany and Britain negotiated colonial rights in the 1800-1900’s. Big game hunters from Frederick Selous, Richard John Cuninghame, Leslie Tarlton to Theodore Roosevelt fashioned the foundations of African expedition safaris that has evolved primarily into sustainable photo safaris, and European explorers like Livingstone, Burton and Speke searched for the source of the Nile by ending up in Lake Victoria. The missionary, David Livingstone, was also found in Ujiji near Kigoma by Lake Tanganyika by journalist Stanley, whose famous greeting,

“Dr. Livingstone, I presume”, was probably as fabricated as Queen Victoria’s supposed gift of Mount Kilimanjaro to her German nephew. Follow their Tanzania primeval adventure and review the evidence.

5  A tranquil vacation in the wilds of Tanzania offers the ultimate escape from the stress of modern life.

You can return to the simplicity of the wilderness, surrounded by the vast skies and endless plains of the Serengeti, or the seclusion of a river camp in Selous by the miombo woodlands. Sleep under the stars on fly camping treks in remote Katavi or Ruaha, or return to the opulent self-indulgence of a Hemingway-style safari with every luxury and personal service in Tarangire. Sing and dance with the joyful Maasai tribe in Ngorongoro.

POETRY CORNER – “MY DEAR NIGERIA” WRITTEN BY NOME PATT EMEKA

(my dear Nigeria,
every night we behold a star,
it reminds us of hope.)

dear country,
i’m writing your words on my skin
like a tattoo from a bifurcated tool

where each welt is a vestige of hunger,
famine, corruption & insurgency,–
i’m healing yet dying.

did you hear the gong from the hills?
the caustic roars of hungry lions,–
the explosion in the throat of pipelines

& the excursion of souls into the messages of blasts
& the eradication of properties in the voice of booms.
did you hear, did you?

i’m the hopeless child on the streets of kano,
my ribs glow like your future, O Nigeria!
my arms & legs are as thin as your totem

but they sparkle like your tomorrow.
sit with me Nigeria, sit with me &
let’s thread the stars into the body of the moon

where a lonely god sweeps & sleeps,
& hold our fears in our hands & heads.
sit with me Nigeria, sit with me &

let’s watch how the moon agrees with the stars
& the willingness of the sky to hold them
for it’ll be our turn in the morn

to spread out over hills and mountains
to illuminate our terms and scores
the way the sun does in idanre…

my dear Nigeria,
every night we sit here to behold the stars,
it reminds us of hope in the morn.
