Godfrey Ngobi, of Ugandan descent, began his musical journey at the tender age of seven, with the snare drum, in The Kamuli Mission Brass Band. In his wonder years Godfrey’s chosen instrument was the bass guitar, however, there came an opportunity that he was hardly prepared for! A friend, who had complete trust in his ability and knowledge of instruments, requested for his help in selecting instruments to include for his band. This friend also asked Godfrey if he could keep the instruments at his place for a while, and during this time he took the irresistible opportunity to see how it felt to play the Saxophone- it was an experience he will never forget! He immediately fell in love with the sounds it produced and invested in his own. This was the instrument he chose to play at his wedding – it felt magical!… so after that he started “making noise” on it everyday!

Although astonishing to believe, Godfrey’s amazing skill and precision on the bass guitar and Soprano and Alto Saxophones are mostly self taught, and have been developed over years of disciplined practice, insane work ethic and inspiration from various talents such as the band called Spyro Gyra and artists Dave Koz, Kirk Whalum and Maceo Parker. Godfrey started playing professionally, recording and touring with the bands- Big Five and Wakawaka, and was privileged to not only play for, but to write some songs with the most prestigious band in East Africa, The Afrigo Band. He has also worked with established artists like Alex Mukulu, Elly Wamala(Late), Jimmy Katumba(Late), and toured in the UK, Kenya, USA, Germany, France, and Rwanda.

Godfrey’s emotional style, which combines reggae, Latin, jazz and African folk has been known to bring listeners to tears. Not only does his truly big heart show through his musical ability, Godfrey is also a philanthropist and aims to become a significant influence in the world and give back to the community even more, as his success grows.

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT, IN CELEBRATION OF THE AMAZING YOUSSOU N’DOUR FROM SENEGAL

Some of the most exciting sounds to come out of Africa in the late ’80s and 1990s were produced by Senegal-born vocalist Youssou N’Dour. Although rooted in the traditional music of his homeland, N’Dour consistently sought new means of expression. In addition to recording as a soloist, N’Dourcollaborated with a lengthy list of influential artists including Paul SimonPeter GabrielNeneh Cherry, and Branford Marsalis.

A native of the impoverished Media section of Dakar, N’Dour inherited his musical skills from his mother, a griot (oral historian) who taught him to sing as a child. A seasoned performer before his teens, N’Dourjoined the popular group the Star Band de Dakar at the age of 19. Within two years, he had assumed leadership of the group, which he renamed Super E’toile de Dakar. With the band accompanying his four- or five-octave vocals, N’Dour helped to pioneer mbalax, an uptempo blend of African, Caribbean, and pop rhythms. Performing for the first time in Europe in 1984, N’Dour and Super E’toile de Dakarmade their North American debut the following year.

N’Dour‘s talents soon attracted the support of top-rated musicians. In 1986, his vocals were featured on Paul Simon‘s Graceland and Peter Gabriel‘s So. He subsequently toured around the world as opening act for Gabriel. His greatest exposure came when he agreed to be a co-headliner, along with GabrielBruce SpringsteenSting, and Tracy Chapman, on the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! tour in 1988. The same year, he performed at the much-publicized birthday concert for South African activist (and president) Nelson Mandela at Wembley Stadium in London.

N’Dour cemented his reputation in 1989, when he released his first internationally distributed album, The Lion, which included a tune, “Shaking the Tree,” that he co-wrote with Gabriel. Upon signing with Spike Lee‘s Columbia-distributed 40 Acres & a Mule label, N’Dour scored a Grammy nomination in 1991 with his first effort for the label, Eyes Open. He continued to seek new outlets for his creativity, including an African opera that premiered at the Paris Opera in July 1993. Recorded in Senegal, N’Dour‘s album The Guide, released in 1994, included his hit duet with Swedish-born vocalist Neneh Cherry, “Seven Seconds.”

A steady stream of greatest-hits packages, reissues, singles, and even a few full-length records — including a handful on Nonesuch, 2002’s Nothing’s in Vain, 2004’s Egypt, and 2007’s Rokku Mi Rokka — poured out during the late ’90s and into the next century, featuring N’Dour working with artists from Etoile de Dakar to GabrielEgypt, which went on to win a Grammy, caused quite a cultural and political stir when it was released during the month of Ramadan. A documentary DVD centered around the whole affair, Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love, appeared early in 2010 and included a biography of N’Dour‘s career as well as extensive concert footage and film of N’Dour working on the Egypt project. The following year, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree in music from Yale University.

In 2012, N’Dour embarked on an unsuccessful run for president of Senegal. However, that same year he was appointed tourism and culture minister by Senegal’s then prime minister, Abdoul Mbaye. By 2013, he had returned to performing, although it took him several more years to return to the studio. In 2016, N’Dour delivered his 34th album, Africa Rekk, featuring guest appearances by AkonFally Ipupa, and Spotless.

Nigerian Diaspora To Launch Campaign Against Irregular Migration In Lagos

An information campaign to raise public awareness of the dangers of irregular migration will kick off at the Centre for Management Development (CMD) in Lagos on 12 September.

Initiated by African-German Information Center (AGIC), Hamburg, and The African Courier Verlag, Berlin, with the support of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the campaign under the aegis of the “Migration Enlightenment Project in Nigeria (MEPN)” will work with the media, civil society and government agencies to dissuade young people from taking illegal routes to Europe.

Among those expected to attend the press conference/project launch are journalists, representatives of youth organizations, women groups and government officials.

Speakers billed to talk at the one-day event include Hon. Rita Orji, chairperson of the Committee on the Diaspora at the Federal House of Representatives, Kenneth Gbandi, director of AGiC and chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Europe, and Femi Awoniyi, publisher of The African Courier.

The “Know the Facts” campaign, which will run until the end the year, seeks to promote an increased awareness about the dangers and risks of irregular migration to Europe and explain the legal requirements for regular migration with the overall objective of promoting Safe Migration.

The campaign, captioned “Look before you Leave”, will highlight the opportunities for legal migration to Europe and give a realistic picture of the situation of irregular migrants in Europe while also encouraging youths to look at positive alternatives to emigration available in Nigeria.

Thousands of young Africans are victims of people-smugglers who deceive prospective emigrants into paying sometimes thousands of dollars for a supposedly easy passage to Europe only to be abandoned in the transit countries such as Libya or Niger, where they’re exposed to harsh living conditions and human rights abuse.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), up to 1 million migrants are trapped in transit in Libya. The frustration of their precarious situation and the dangers they face in the North African country, which is in a state of conflict, make many migrants so desperate to willingly take the grave risk of boarding rickety boats to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

More than 1,500 migrants have died in the perilous journey this year alone, says the IOM. Many more are believed to have perished in the transit countries.

POETRY CORNER “SUNDANCE” WRITTEN BY KENNETH CHRISTIE – ATITI

SUNDANCE

give me the oil that spreads
from finger to finger,
that our licking might be
for ever and ever.

what is the face of this sundance
where pollinations fall in tearful radiance

the shells broke to let offsprings
into new beginnings
where semen had embraced
in unbloody disvirginity

what is the face of this sundance
whose sudden setting makes shadows walk backwards again

did they…
did we not know that
even gods bend to bow
in that uncompleted circle
of new farewells?

what is the face of this sundance
but in the rising of new gods
who shall dance into tomorrow
with piercing rays

and so…
let Stanislavsky brightly turn
to see how golden embryos
transit methodically into new realities

and then we shall remember
when we danced in the sun together
with unbroken lines
and rays of unforgettable memories

at those high places
where you shall seize the day
with all in it

when you hold time still
in fragments of your own interpretations

give me the oil
that spreads
from finger to finger
that our licking
might be
for ever and ever.

-Kenneth Christie-Atiti.
