INTRODUCING FOCUS ORGANIZATION – ONE OF OUR MEDIA PARTNERS FOR OUR BLACK HISTORY EVENT AT PARLIAMENT

INTRODUCING FOCUS ORGANIZATION – ONE OF OUR MEDIA PARTNERS FOR OUR BLACK HISTORY EVENT AT PARLIAMENT

Born out of a passion for Africa, sound, music, culture and tradition, Focus Organization was founded by Kouassi Atta (Cote d’Ivoire) in 2010. His aim was simple, to bring good music to the masses – music with soul, power, difference, honesty and heritage.

It wasn’t long before Atta’s focused energy took him to every corner of London, searching high and low for venues, partners and willing individuals to help host his ambitious music events.

Mingling among artists, afropolitans and music enthusiasts, Atta soon found himself at Passing Clouds, celebrating one of his very first events with the hypnotic rhythms of theSoukous kings, Kasai Masai. It was here that Atta met Victoria Blackshaw, a young gig-goer ready to take on all things focused. Together, they embarked on a journey of no return, working with incredible artists, learning about new genres and dance moves, and connecting with scores of other great promoters around town. Severa Adou, fellow Ivorian and budding musician, moved to London from Paris soon after and joined the Focus team, helping organise gigs all over the capital.

Launching in East London (Cargo, Passing Clouds, Favela Chic, Open the Gate), Focus moved across to West London (Mau Mau, Notting Hill Arts Club), popped down to South London for a while (CLF Art Café, Mango Landin’), ran a night in central (MoMo’s) and finally moved back East to host a couple of a residencies (Rich Mix, Charlie Wrights, Bedroom Bar).

Focus grew, spreading its roots in the London music scene and earning the respect and partnership of organisations like Joyful Noise (London African Music Festival), Wormfood, AGMP, Target Live, Continental Drifts, 2 For The Road.

ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK, AFRICA4U AWARD NOMINEE “HERBERT SHAW” FROM SOUTH AFRICA, LIVING IN HUNGARY

I was born in Durban South Africa on the 18th of February 1979. I have one older brother and four younger sisters all raised together in a religious background in the community of Wentworth. My father was and still is the praise and worship leader in the local church. My mother also has a beautiful voice.

Throughout my youth I was always linked to and deeply involved in music and arts including rapping, dancing, singing and even some acting. Later moved to Ireland where I continued to persue my musical aspirations while working as a Barber. In Dublin I met and fell in love with a Hungarian girl who introduced me to Budapest where I now reside since 2010.

My passion and love for music and arts has grown over the years. Since August 2016 I am the host of ‘The Good Afternoon Budapest Show’ on Kontakt Radio. I really enjoy presenting The Good Afternoon Budapest Show as it allows me to share music of many different genres and influences as well as chatting on the air with interesting guests of various walks of life. Hosting a radioshow is a childhood dream come true

Godfrey Ngobi, of Ugandan descent, began his musical journey at the tender age of seven, with the snare drum, in The Kamuli Mission Brass Band. In his wonder years Godfrey’s chosen instrument was the bass guitar, however, there came an opportunity that he was hardly prepared for! A friend, who had complete trust in his ability and knowledge of instruments, requested for his help in selecting instruments to include for his band. This friend also asked Godfrey if he could keep the instruments at his place for a while, and during this time he took the irresistible opportunity to see how it felt to play the Saxophone- it was an experience he will never forget! He immediately fell in love with the sounds it produced and invested in his own. This was the instrument he chose to play at his wedding – it felt magical!… so after that he started “making noise” on it everyday!

Although astonishing to believe, Godfrey’s amazing skill and precision on the bass guitar and Soprano and Alto Saxophones are mostly self taught, and have been developed over years of disciplined practice, insane work ethic and inspiration from various talents such as the band called Spyro Gyra and artists Dave Koz, Kirk Whalum and Maceo Parker. Godfrey started playing professionally, recording and touring with the bands- Big Five and Wakawaka, and was privileged to not only play for, but to write some songs with the most prestigious band in East Africa, The Afrigo Band. He has also worked with established artists like Alex Mukulu, Elly Wamala(Late), Jimmy Katumba(Late), and toured in the UK, Kenya, USA, Germany, France, and Rwanda.

Godfrey’s emotional style, which combines reggae, Latin, jazz and African folk has been known to bring listeners to tears. Not only does his truly big heart show through his musical ability, Godfrey is also a philanthropist and aims to become a significant influence in the world and give back to the community even more, as his success grows.
