ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK,CASSIANNE MARTINA LAWRENCE FROM JAMAICA – AUTHOR & POET

CLaw was born Cassianne Martina Lawrence in Kingston Jamaica. At the age of 7, she moved to the Cayman Islands to live with her mother and brother. Growing up in Cayman was easy but also very challenging, being a black woman “yes I am going there as it determines and dictates a lot of how CLaw became CLaw.” Growing up in Cayman as a black woman was not easy, I was teased about my skin and my hair as well as my nationality. I was called names such as ching ching which is a blackbird, described to be, black like tar, Tar baby, picky head, black Jamaican and the list goes on.

It may sound funny but as a child having to endure that being described as ugly compared to the light skinned or white females, it was tough. I had a lot of insecurities growing up because of it and still struggle even today at 27 years old.

To mask and hide behind toughness, I started playing sports. I knew I had a talent for it, so I did and I played every sport available to me, making national teams traveling for the country, winning medals and trophies, it was the only way I could escape my insecurities well that and writing.

Writing became a part of me very early in my life but I was too insecure to share it with anyone. Moving to Germany, namely Berlin gave me the platform and the opportunity to showcase my hidden talent. I got my first chance at the poetry meets hip-hop series curated by Jumoke Adeyanju, a brilliant poetess/songstress, and superwoman she has inspired me to walk in my greatness and truth even though she may not know it.

After my first show, I felt alive and knew that writing was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I started a children’s book series called afro kid three years ago and am just now in the illustrating/publication process, I am working on a poetry book and a multitude of other projects. Twenty-seven years after birth and CLaw being held back because of harsh words that were spoken, I am now in my element and speaking my truth one word, one sentence, one paragraph, one page at a time.

MESSAGE FROM BARRISTER EYO EKPO – ASPIRING GOVERNOR FOR CROSS RIVER STATE

My fellow Citizens of Cross River State,

The year 2018 has come and gone, but has left us with a lot to think about, about ourselves, and our State. We are getting to the 20th anniversary of our democratic experience, preceded by the general elections that will start in the coming weeks.

Considering the firm foundations laid at the beginning of this journey, the high hopes and aspirations we had for our State have not been realised. It is also clear that a considerable number of our people, from Bekwarra to Bakassi, believe that the past three years of the State Government have been marked largely by lost opportunities and disappointment.

Despite our disappointing position today, we must all be genuinely thankful for 2018, for the experiences and the lessons the year brought to us, and for seeing it to the end through His Grace and Mercy. Let us now commit ourselves to making 2019 a watershed year in the history of our State, the year of seizing our moment and redirecting our course.

We must recall the stated vision of Cross River State becoming the leading Nigerian State. What we now owe ourselves and those coming behind us is to reflect on a journey that was once so full of hope, recognise that we have departed from the path of development and growth and reset our priorities to start working again for what we know ought to be.

Therefore on this New Year’s Day, on behalf of my family, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Cross River State, and the Eyo Ekpo Campaign Organisation, I wish all Cross Riverians a 2019 of reaffirmation, rebirth and renaissance and invite all who love this State to join us in this resolve.

May the Almighty bless our commitment to do right for our State.

Eyo O. Ekpo
SDP Governorship Candidate
Cross River State

MY POSTER

Michelle Obama named America’s most admired woman in new poll

Former first lady Michelle Obama has been named America’s most admired woman of 2018, according to a Gallup poll. This is the first time in 17 years that someone other than Hillary Clinton was at the top of the list, according to Gallup.  As for the most admired man, former President Barack Obama won for the 11th year in a row.

The annual survey asks Americans to name the man and woman they admire most, living anywhere in the world. Mrs. Obama placed first, with 15 percent of people naming her, followed by Oprah Winfrey, who was mentioned 5 percent of the time. Hillary Clinton and Melania Trump followed with 4 percent mentioning each.

Gallup attributes the switch at the top of the women’s list to the fact that Clinton “more fully retreated to private life after a long career as first lady, U.S. senator, secretary of state and two-time presidential candidate.” Michelle Obama is currently touring the U.S. to promote her best-selling autobiography, “Becoming,” putting her back in the spotlight despite the fact that her role as first lady is over.

Queen Elizabeth also made the top 10 for a record 50th time. Other world leaders, activists, entertainers and one Supreme Court justice rounded out the list.

Gallup Poll: Most Admired Woman, 2018

Michelle Obama           15% mentioned
Oprah Winfrey              5%
Hillary Clinton               4%
Melania Trump              4%
Queen Elizabeth            2%
Angela Merkel                2%
Ruth Bader Ginsburg    2%
Ellen DeGeneres            2%
Nikki Haley                     1%
Malala Yousafzai            1%
Nancy Pelosi                   1%

As for the most admired man, former President Barack Obama’s 11-year winning streak leaves him one first-place finish short of tying former WWII commander and President Dwight Eisenhower for the most times being most admired man,
