ROLE MODEL OF THE WEEK – LEEDS BASED JOHN SHANGWA – CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR EXHIBIT 54

Our Role Model for this week is Mr John Shangwa originally from Zimbabwe. John Shangwa is the Creative Director for EXHIBIT 54.

Information about this new amazing initiative can be found below

EXHIBIT 54 is more than just a network; it is a dedicated force for empowering and uplifting the lives of Africans and Caribbeans in the UK. Serving as a dynamic community hub, EXHIBIT 54 fosters a deep sense of belonging and unity among its readers by highlighting both the extraordinary and everyday successes within our communities. This platform resonates with those who are passionate about their heritage and recognise the importance of seeing themselves reflected positively in the media.

Born out of a recognition that our communities are often misrepresented or overlooked, EXHIBIT 54 was inspired by the need to change the narrative. Too often, the media fails to capture the true vibrancy and diversity of African and Caribbean lives. This lack of accurate representation can have profound effects on one’s sense of identity and wellbeing. That’s why it is crucial that we take control of our stories—amplifying our voices, showcasing our talents, and sharing our experiences in ways that uplift and empower.

EXHIBIT 54 offers a safe space where you can learn, be inspired, and feel connected to your community. Through powerful storytelling and a dedicated focus on promoting African and Caribbean businesses, we aim to fill the gap left by traditional media outlets. While representation in our media is improving, EXHIBIT 54 aspires to be that much-needed hub, providing a platform that highlights positive narratives and shines a spotlight on the creatives, entrepreneurs, and change-makers within our community.

We are deeply committed to strengthening the bonds within these diasporas, celebrating our achievements, and ensuring that our stories are normalised and celebrated. By sharing our diverse experiences, we create a space for togetherness, where we can collectively work towards a brighter future for the next generation. EXHIBIT 54 is here to represent the best in us, inspiring each other through the stories that reflect our journey.

Representation is not just important; it is essential. This is our contribution to promoting and preserving positive narratives within our communities. Join us in celebrating who we are, what we bring, and all that we can achieve together.

FEELING BLESSED AT THE AGE OF 55 – TONY TOKUNBO FERNANDEZ

Each dawn is filled with a transition of new secrets and opportunities.

Some people say that success and fortune do not grow on trees, but i have always believed that we have been blessed with the insight to become the co-creators of our dreams.

Today I am 55, blessed and privileged to taste the fruits of this day.

Time ( and its many seasons) has become a great friend over the year’s – enhancing my life with great and scary experiences, but also revealing the power behind clarity, the need to evolve, the ease to love , the will to adapt and the chance to share .

There is no time like the present moment and as I woke up this morning, I felt grateful to embrace another page of Lifes precious album .

Today , its  an honour to be alive for happiness is dressed in the purity of simple moments and the more we listen to our heart’s, the more we breathe with clarity.

At 55, there are valuable lessons which still remain close to my heart, feeding my spirit into a new room for growth.

And Today , on my Birthday, I would like to share these precious lessons with you which are still very close to my heart.

1.   ALWAYS BE YOURSELF AND AIM TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF

Believe it or not , today we live in a world where many people struggle to be themselves and discover their purpose in the process.

The truth is that we are all different and the profound beauty and importance of our differences are often underrated.

Everyone brings something different to the table and there is so much understanding when we accept and embrace our differences.

We also live in a world where many people follow other people’s dreams , lifestyles and aspirations to ‘ belong ”

The presence of social media does not help in feeding the emotions of many people into a world of trends , lifestyles and ideals .

There is so much joy when we are able to look within, discover our purpose, act on our calling and be ourselves.

It also creates an ease of clarity and the ability to work towards our very best version.

It also gives us a deep understanding of point number 2 below

2.  KNOW YOURELF AND NEVER BE IN DENAIL OF OYUR FLAWS, SHORTCOMINGS AND IMPERFECTIONS

The moment i went on a journey to discover who i really was, it opened new doors to new moments of clarity and widened my vision

For very many of us this is a lifetime journey, but guess what ?

It is also a healthy one .

Knowing myself also came with something more profound.  It was important for me to know my shortcomings, flaws and imperfections, but more important never to in denial of my ugly sides .

I truly began to discover who i really was during the first COVID lockdown several years ago.

It was also one of the most fulfilling periods of my life ( Definitely a story for another day ).

There is something beautiful about not being in denial of our flaws and shortcomings. We are  able yo accept ourselves and also address what we truly need to work on .

The truth is we are all far from perfect, and there is nothing as unhealthy as being in denial of our shortcomings.

Surprising, in the last ten years, I have discovered that many people who come across as flawless or close to perfection, in reality have several hidden skeletons in their cupboards .   I find this fascinating.

We live in a mysterious world , but we also live in a world where its such a beautiful thing to work on ourselves.

Always remember this , no one in life has the right to judge you .

Ask yourself why is it their place?

We are all Work in progress and blessed with different values, standards and mindsets

Here are a few questions for you

1. How much do you know yourself?

2.  Are you fully aware of your shortcomings and imperfections ?

3. Do you like yourself in spite of your flaws ?

3. LIFE IS SHORT- ALL WE TRULY HAVE IS THE GIFT OF THE PRESENT MOMENT

Life is short, all we truly have is the gift of the present moment

So Follow your heart, Be you .  Work Smart, , Play hard , Do the things which make you happy and embrace the moment.

You only live once .

Thanks to all my family and friends for all your birthday messages.

I love you all .

P.S.

I am also available for 121 online sessions on  Self Esteem and Finding your purpose.

ROTIMI OLORUNFEMI BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES

The University of Bradford Union of Students hosted a vibrant showcase of local artists’ works, drawing the attention of distinguished guests and community leaders. Among the attendees were the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Gerry Barker, and Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, the incoming Mayor of Leeds, who delivered inspiring speeches. This event was hosted on the 29 of February, 2024.

Councillor Katung, noted as the first elected African at Leeds City Council, reminisced about her days as an international student in West Yorkshire, sharing heartfelt stories from her journey.

Rotimi Olorunfemi, the artistic director of the event, emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between the university and the local community. “I aim to open the university’s doors to local artists, breaking down any barriers that may exist,” Olorunfemi explained. He highlighted how art can be a powerful medium for individuals to express their struggles and triumphs. One piece depicted overcoming personal challenges, while another conveyed the message that “joy comes in the morning,” symbolizing hope and resilience.

The event was further enriched by Councillor Katung’s reflections on her journey as an international student, adding a unique and touching perspective to the exhibition. Olorunfemi remarked on the significance of providing a platform for these artists, many of whom create their works in solitude. “They were heard, seen, and valued,” he said. “We gave out prizes and showed appreciation for their art, which meant a lot to them.”

The exhibition featured a diverse array of artists, including Peter J. Hodgson, Camelia Calarasiu, Nithiya Sivaraman, Zaynab Sabri, Oyedotun Oyesomi, Olamide Jasanya, and Josa Osa-Oni. The prize winners were selected by judges Michael AllHouse, Arthur Williams, Shabina Aslam, and Jack Massie.

For those interested in acquiring these beautiful pieces, Olorunfemi mentioned that the artworks are available for purchase. The event was organized in collaboration with Oyedotun Oyesomi, Grant Uzoanya, Manvita Manjunath, and Alastair Bill Veigas.

Reflecting on the power of storytelling through art, Olorunfemi stated, “People don’t know you if they don’t know your story. It’s easy to judge without understanding someone’s background. Through art, we can connect and understand each other better. You can become anything you want to become.”
