WHAT NIGERIAN WEST INDIAN ASSOCIATION MEANS TO ME – WRITTEN BY ROGER OKEWOLE

We moved to Nigeria in 1975 from Scotland. It was a weird experience for me because I don’t
think I really understood what leaving the only society I’d ever known actually meant. The sense
of displacement was very real and I was so confused, at times I would walk to our backyard in
Apapa expecting to bump into our backyard in East Kilbride (don’t be harsh, I have always had
a wild imagination).
When we met my father’s family, I never felt they knew what to make of us. There always
seemed to be an expectation of something to be given but never returned. I do not think this can
be dismissed as youthful imagination. I still don’t think I was wrong. I could neither really relate
to nor get really close to my cousins because of that mental barrier.
At school for the first few years I didn’t really fit in. I grew to be quite popular but I always
embraced the fact that I was seen as just a little different as a defense mechanism so it couldn’t
be used against me.
I remember we started meeting a lot of West Indians almost from the time we arrived in Nigeria.
They were the first people who I felt embraced my family and I on our own merits. The “aunties”
and “uncles” and their children formed that backbone of my social circle before the NWIA was
formally constituted. Back then it was a group of fishes out of water supporting each other.
By the time I was a teenager, NWIA kids made up almost all of my social circle. Maybe I should
have been more inclusive, but it is a fact that without understanding NWIA you do not know me.
There is an old photo of me at my father’s 1996 funeral that shows me flanked by NWIA kids
and aunties comforting me.
It was an NWIA kid who helped me look smart at my wedding, adjusting my lapel and tie.
It was an NWIA kid that sang at my wedding.
I married an NWIA kid.
I suffered a major stroke in 2021 and threw a birthday party/celebration of healing that NWIA
kids attended from all over. Even after all this time, they still hold me up, just like they did at my
dad’s funeral.
My fondest memories of Nigeria are almost all centered around NWIA events.
There is no doubt about it, NWIA was my first family outside of nuclear family. My feelings
about this are undiluted.

SO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW HAS 400 SUBSCRIBERS – BUT DO NUMBERS REALLY MATTER ?

I often hear people say that “its all about the numbers” as we live in “a number world“, But do numbers really matter? What are your priorities and your vision in the digital space?

To be honest, the number game has never been part of my long term goals or my core values as THE TONY TOKUNBO FERNANDEZ SHOW is all about promoting the true life and success stories of African and Caribbean achievers around the world as well as feeding our listeners with inspirational content that will continue to make an impact on their lives. (Regardless of the number of listeners or subscribers we have each week)

I would like to encourage someone today to embrace your passion , your purpose, your calling, the things you believe in and the things you enjoy and with time you will discover that your journey becomes lighter as you embrace the beauty of fulfillment.

It is not always about the number of people in a room, its more about the quality of people in the room and how they are able to make a positive impact to the world with the sunshine that unfolds from their minds and their hearts .

And all the same, if you like what we do, then feel free to subscribe to our channel – https://www.youtube.com/user/etekatoks

COMING SOON ON TONY TOKUNBO FERNANDEZ SHOW – INTERVIEW WITH ENGLANDS, 1ST BLACK CRICKETER – ROLAND BUTCHER

COMING SOON ON TONY TOKUNBO FERNANDEZ SHOW – INTERVIEW WITH ENGLANDS, 1ST BLACK CRICKETER – ROLAND BUTCHER – THIS IS A SHOW YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO MISS

Roland Orlando Butcher (born 14 October 1953, Saint Philip, Barbados)[1] is a former cricket player and coach, who played for England in three Test matches and three One Day Internationals from 1980 to 1981. He is recognised as being the first black cricketer to represent England.[2] His brief international career was somewhat overshadowed by the death of Ken Barrington, and the ‘Jackman affair‘.

cousin of Basil, Roland Butcher had come to the United Kingdom at the age of thirteen from his native Barbados.[1] He was an aggressive middle-order batsman, who represented Middlesex between 1974 and 1990. His intuitive batting style owed much to the archetypical West Indian calypso flair.[1] He “secured his place in history when he became the first black player to represent England, making his Test debut at Bridgetown in 1980-81”.[3]

Butcher came to prominence during Middlesex’s successes in 1980 when they won the County Championship and the Gillette Cup, impressing with a rapid half-century in the final of the latter.[4] He had actually made his England debut two weeks later, impressing with another half-century on his one-day international debut against Australia.[5] He struggled more however on the 1980-1 tour against the West Indies who had the most powerful bowling line-up in the world at the time and did not play for England again.

In 1983, “he suffered a sickening injury which threatened his eyesight when struck by George Ferris“, but managed to recuperate and return to the sport.[3] He continued to enjoy success with Middlesex, winning the County Championship again in 1982 and 1985, and featuring in victories in the finals of the NatWest Trophy in 1984 and 1988 and the Benson and Hedges Cup in 1983. In 1987 he won the Walter Lawrence Trophy for recording the fastest century of the season (in terms of balls faced) against Sussex
